NEW ULM–Evelyn “Evie” Hughes Hacker, age 91, of New Ulm, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family on Friday, November 15, 2024, at the New Ulm Medical Center.
Evie was born on August 11, 1933, in Havre, MT to Wilbur Olson and Evelyn Evans. She spent her early years in Wanda, MN and she graduated from Springfield High School in MN in 1951.
Evie attended the St. Francis Convent School prior to receiving her nursing degree at Sacred Heart Hospital in Havre, MT in 1954 where she became an RN. She met and married Jerrold Austin Hughes. Together they had eight children, six sons and two daughters. Jerrold and Evie later divorced. In 1975 she met and married Roman C. Hacker and together they had one son.
Evie held many nursing positions throughout her career. She worked at the Springfield Hospital, Spring Valley Hospital, the Union Hospital, and the Loretta Hospital. She finished her career in nursing at the New Ulm Medical Center where she retired in 1999 after 45 years of nursing. Evie loved being a mom and nurse. She was always grateful she had her nursing degree, as she was able to support and keep us all together while working full time.
Evie founded Solo Parents, an organization for men and women that were either widowed or divorced, but with children in their care. In this organization they engaged in fun dancing, boating, sledding, and picnics. Evie was the hospital auxiliary president for several years during which she expanded a volunteer program to be active in all the hospital departments. She was named Minnesota Auxiliary Volunteer for 2004. In 2005, she was honored with the New Ulm Medical Center Legend Award. Evie was the Region F President for MN Health and Auxiliary for 2 years. She volunteered at the New Ulm Chamber of Commerce and Faith in Action. The hospital auditorium at the NUMC was later named after her. She led a full and varied life.
Evie is survived by her sons, Wynn (Denise), Guy (Lori), Mike (Allison), Jay (Patti), Charlie, Doug (Rhonda), and Roman Jr. (Kathryn); daughters, Missy (Craig), and Rachel (Lowell); 22 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; siblings, Wilburette “Willy” Osgood, Monica “Stacy” Olson, Eric (Teresa) Olson, Felicitas “Tish” (John), Naomi “Becky” Olson, and Jeff (Cathy) Olson.
