John was a renowned athlete growing up, playing baseball, basketball, and football. Upon graduation, he earned the City Athlete of the Year and was offered a scholarship to play football at South Dakota State University. John attended SDSU for a year before injury ended his sporting career. He then enlisted in the United States Army and was stationed over in German. The family would like to thank Divine Providence for the wonderful care John received over the years.
