NEW ULM­­–Larry Murphy, age 79 of New Ulm, died Thursday, January 23, 2025 at the Oak Hills Living Center in New Ulm.Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. on Thursday, January 30, 2025 at St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in New Ulm with Pastor Nathan Scharf officiating. Burial will follow in the St. Paul’s Lutheran Cemetery in New Ulm where the New Ulm Area Comrades of Valor Honor Guard will provide full military honors. A visitation will be held from 9-11 a.m. on Thursday, January 30, 2025 at St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in New Ulm, prior to the service. Larry James Murphy was born October 1, 1945 at Loretta Hospital in New Ulm, MN to Earl and Nina (Sveine) Murphy. He lived in New Ulm until the young age of 7 and moved to Kelliher, MN and then to Babbitt, MN. He graduated in 1964 from JFK High School in Babbitt, MN. He entered the Marines in 1967. He was wounded in Vietnam and received the Purple Heart. He worked 18 years at Reserve Mining in Babbitt, MN. Larry lived a short time in Sheridan, WY. He then moved to Indianapolis, IN in 1987. He graduated from Purdue University with a degree in Psychology in 1991. He worked as a therapist in Columbus, IN at Koala Hospital in the Counseling Center.

He became totally disabled out of the military in 1996 and retired. In 1996 he moved back to New Ulm. On September 5, 1997 he married Kathy Huhn, his childhood friend. Larry and Kathy knew each other as small children and played together. She lived next door to his grandparents.

Larry loved going to hockey games. He was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran church and was in the Men’s Club. He enjoyed traveling with Kathy all over the United States. Larry was a member of #807 Purple Heart Chapter.

Larry is survived by his wife, Kathy of 27 years; children, Jason Christie (Murphy) of Houston, TX, Jessica Dorman of Virginia, MN, Becky Murphy of Ely, MN, Suzanne Murphy of Indianapolis, IN; step-children, Kelly (Paul) Hanson of Zionsville, IN; grandchildren, Madeline, Jacob, Alex, Isabelle, Eliana, Stella; brothers, Richard (Bev) Murphy of Kissimmee, FL, Tim Murphy of Fergus Falls; sister, Sherill Murphy of Babbitt, MN.

He is preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Terry, Patrick Murphy, and infant brother Jerry Murphy.

Larry was a very strong believer in Our Lord his Savior.

His favorite place was the DQ.

Larry was a resident of Oak Hills since January 2020.
