Joanne (Penkert) Schugel was born December 25, 1938 to Elmer and Louise Penkert in New Ulm, Minnesota. She attended Holy Trinity Catholic School through grade 12 and married Eugene Schugel on July 27, 1968. They made their home together in New Ulm and welcomed son, Ryan, in 1971. Joanne worked many years at New Ulm Telephone, NUACS, and Cathedral Rectory until the time of her death, and was a member of the Christian Mothers and St. Elizabeth Society, and Council of Catholic Women.
She enjoyed spending time with her family, cooking and baking, anything Christmas, collecting Beanie Babies, puzzle books, and a good game of Canasta. She also welcomed new friends as a host for Germans during Heritagefest for many years. Her grandchildren, nieces and nephews each received a nickname at birth and she expected a hug each and every time she saw them. Joanne will be dearly missed by all those that knew her. Blessed be her memory.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the New Ulm Area Catholic Schools Lunch Program.
