He was preceded in death by his parents, Roger, and Virginia Schimmele; his father-in-law, and mother-in-law, Bill, and Maxine Minnihan; and his brother-in-law, John Herring.
George Elmer Schimmele was born September 13, 1947, in Mankato to Roger and Virginia Jean (Erickson) Schimmele. Growing up in southern Minnesota, George was a 1965 graduate from the Mapleton Public High School. He furthered his education at the Austin Vocational School, and later Mankato State University where he attained his teaching certificate. George was united in marriage on August 4, 1967, to Margaret Kae Minnihan in Sioux Falls. This union blessed the couple with a son and a daughter whom together they eventually raised in New Ulm. Early in George’s working career, he worked for the Minnesota Highway Department, Owatonna Manufacturing, and Year-A-Round Cab. George later went into work for St. Clair Public School where he worked as a custodian, but also taught shop and worked as a substitute teacher. George later taught Stationary Engineering at Mankato Technical College before beginning his 37-year career at the Chief Environmental Services Director at Martin Luther College. Besides his work, there were a variety of hobbies George enjoyed in life. As an avid outdoorsman, George loved spending time on the lakes fishing, or out in the woods hunting or four wheeling with family and friends. Many great memories were made on the countless trips he made going “up-north” to the cabin. George enjoyed sharing his knowledge of the game coaching his children in softball, and passing what he knew down to the next generation as well. He enjoyed following all of his grandchildren’s events, but especially loved watching them play their sports. His family was always number one to him. He will forever be remembered for his kind heart, his perpetual smile, and his unforgettable hugs. Although it was sometimes hard to get a word in edgeways, George was always loved to simply listen to his grandkids tell stories about their life events, or simply about their day. George was a Boy Scout, a proud member of the NRA and Pheasants Forever, a US Swimming Official, and a member of Christ the King Lutheran Church in New Ulm. May these memories, and the countless others forever stay in the hearts and minds of all who knew him best. Blessed be his memory.
