Baggin’ in the Street moves forward
The 2nd annual Baggin’ in the Street bean bag tournament will move forward Saturday despite a forecast for snow. This is the correct choice. The entire reason for the tournament is give people a reason to get outside during the winter months. To get the full impact, the tournament should be held during a snowstorm. The snowfall should add an interesting dynamic to the tournament. This year’s tournament is destined to be memorable.

Signs at Center and Broadway are safe
New Ulm is looking to approve amending the zoning ordinance regarding temporary signs. There was some initial concern this could impact the banner signs seen around the fence of Center and Broadway, but on further review those signs should not be greatly impacted. This is a good thing because those signs are a great community resources. Everyone travels through the intersection of Center and Broadway. It is the perfect place to post news about upcoming plays and pancake breakfasts.

$6.1 million in DEED grants for child care
The Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development (DEED) announced $6.1 million in child care grants for day care organizations across the state. A total of 25 child care grants were awarded. God’s Treasures Childcare Learning Center in Winthrop was awarded $240,000 which will allow them to add about 14 child care slots. Any assistance from the state in fixing child care shortage is a benefit. This grant funds will make a world of difference for families across the region. Additional grants includes Renville County receiving $345,000 for day care and Hutchinson receiving $40,000.
