Collegiate success

Two basketball players from The Journal’s area saw their teams both make it to this year’s NCAA National Basketball Tournament. Madelia grad Ja’Sean Glover saw his Omaha Mavericks make it to the men’s tournament for the first time in program history, while Sleepy Eye Eye St. Mary’s grad Madison Mathiowetz and the South Dakota State Jackrabbits made it to the women’s tourney for the third year in a row. This is a reminder for area’s athletes that being from a small town doesn’t mean they can’t achieve big things.

The blizzard missed

Last week began with prediction that a huge snow storm would hit the region Tuesday night or Wednesday morning. The blizzard did hit, but only in the southeast corner of the state. The New Ulm region remained clear of new snowfall. March is notorious for its weather extremes and this month is living up to that reputation, with extreme warm weather followed by a significant cool down. But at least we have received no new snow.

Treasure Haus celebrates 40 years

Last week, Treasure Haus celebrated its 40th anniversary in New Ulm. The thrift show was created in 1985 as method of raising funds for Minnesota Valley Lutheran (MVL). In the four decades since the thrift shop opened, its raised close to $2 million for the school. This is an impressive achievement in fundraising and a testament to the volunteers working at the shop. But Treasure Haus also deserves credit for remaining in business for 40 years and becoming a staple of the community. Treasure Haus is a wonderful resource for the entire community looking for various odds and ends at a reasonable price.

Starting at $4.38/week.
