Human Rights Award a noble honor

Wednesday, the New Ulm Human Rights Commission (HRC) held its annual Human Rights Award ceremony. Traditionally the award is given to an individual or group that contributes to the advancement of human rights in the community. This year the HRC broke tradition and gave the award to two recipients. Jeanine Hinsman, operator of New Ulm’s Own, and the local host committee for the Makatoh Reconciliation and Healing Horse Ride each received the award. HRC believed Hinsman and the host committee each exemplified different ways to support human rights. One is an individual over long term and one is a group with a specific event. Hinsman’s work with the New Ulm’s Own Fair Trade shop and helping bring a Ukrainian refugee family to the community, showed longterm work from an individual. The host committee for the Makatoh Reconciliation Riders represented a group effort for a single event. The Human Rights Award is a noble award to receive. It represents the best of the community and it is wonderful that the New Ulm area has multiple individuals and groups who are worthy to receive it in a single year.

Celebrate the return of baseball season

Thursday, March 27 was the official opening day of baseball season in North America. Major League Baseball technically opened the season March 18 at the Tokyo Dome with a series between the Dodgers and Cubs, but either way it means baseball is back and that’s always reason to celebrate. Unfortunately the Twin lost the opening game to the Cardinals, but there is over 160 games to go before the end of the season.

Starting at $4.38/week.
