To the editor:

I am an American and, as such, at this point in time, I can still openly say,  that I strongly disagree with many of President Trump’s recent comments and leanings. He sounds more like a dictator, looking to becoming an emperor, than he does a president of the United States. I also have trouble understanding how any of our legislators can support this man who has openly suggested taking over Greenland, Canada, the Panama Canal, even Gaza.

Our government was originally organized to have three separate branches — executive, legislative, and judicial. They were meant to provide checks and balances on one another. At this moment in time, that system seems to be wavering under great strain. In our Constitution, the government is tasked with being…“of the people, by the people, and for the people.” Right now we seem to have an ’emperor’…a leader who is actually looking only to expand his personal power and the borders of what he seems to be seeing as his ‘kingdom.’

The United States used to welcome new people coming in, care about the people already here, and the people beyond its borders. Sadly, it seems those times have passed.
