Protests for the people

To the editor:

For those who are still curious about Saturday’s demonstration on Broadway — the gathering of over 250 area people was a non-partisan protest of many actions taken by the current administration that will hurt us folks in southern Minnesota. Among these issues are broad, ricocheting tariffs that unsettle markets and will increase our cost of everything from groceries to cars, and cuts to services and programs that we depend on, like access to Social Security, threats to Medicare, VA services for veterans, education services for our kids, even our libraries.

Retirement accounts are losing great sums of our own hard-earned money, grocery prices have not gone down, and an economic recession or even depression is possible. As the Journal reported, farmers are very worried about losing markets, as other countries respond with their own tariffs and boycott our products — even our Canadian neighbors.

These and many more changes have been made by executive order or by Elon Musk, without input or constitutional oversight by our Congress or our elected representatives. Honks and thumbs up by many passers-by on Saturday indicate that a lot of you are also worried about these issues. If you are, you’re welcome to add your voice next time to those of other New Ulmites and area folks who care about each other.
