NEW ULM — Senior Ellie Hohensee picked up two first-place finishes in helping lead New Ulm to a 133.775-114.6 victory against Marshall in a Big South Conference gymnastics dual meet on Monday night.

The Eagles had seven different placewinners with Hohensee, Molly Klimek and Sarah Longtin placing second, third and fourth in the all-around, respectively. The team had not competed since Jan. 19, when it beat St. James Area 134.745-107.375.

“We had another long break and we tried a lot of new skills again tonight,” New Ulm coach Kortney Peterson said. “Some went well and some didn’t. We really improved our vault and bars, but then beam and floor were a little bit tougher for us.”

Hohensee, one of the captains for the Eagles, took first in the uneven bars (8.25) and floor routine (9.10) while taking second on the vault (8.95).

Longtin’s highest finishes were in the bars and beam, where she got second in both. Klimek’s highest finish was on floor with second-place honors.

Still, New Ulm as a whole struggled on balance beam with its four counted scores ranging from 7.40 to 7.675.

“Beam has been our weak point this year,” Peterson said. “We’re really working on staying on. They’ve got a lot of new skills, we just haven’t been able to nail them yet.”

Seventh-grader Saphi McFarquhar won the all-around competition for Marshall, edging out Hohensee with a 34.075 to her 33.70 score.

Sophomore Michelle Rosenhamer recorded the other first-place finish aside from Hohensee’s two, taking the title in vault.

Other placewinners on varsity for New Ulm included Emma Gauert in bars and beam, Kelsi Miller in bars and Kaylee Hutchinson in floor.

New Ulm hosts Waseca at 6 p.m. on Tuesday.
