Jordan cruises past Sleepy Eye
MANKATO — Jordan piled up 13 hits on the way to a 12-2, five-inning win over Sleepy Eye Legion Post 7 in the Second District Sub-State Legion Baseball Tournament on Tuesday at ISG Field.
Jordan, the No. 2 seed, also showed some patience at the plate, drawing five walks.
The win moves Jordan on to a 10:30 a.m. winner’s bracket game against Worthington on Wednesday at ISG Field. Sleepy Eye, the seventh seed, drops to the elimination bracket with the loss and will play Marshall at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at Wolverton Field in Mankato.
Sleepy Eye had six hits and stranded seven runners. Sleepy Eye also had the challenge of playing without any reserves due to the Sleepy Eye Junior Legion team playing in the Junior Legion Sub-State tournament on Tuesday.
A two-run homer by Daniel Zang with two outs put Jordan on the board first in the bottom of the first inning. Six more runs came across in the second for Jordan, led by a pair of two-run singles from Zac Daak and Luke Dyrhaug.
Sleepy Eye got a run back to trail 8-1 in the third after Jackson Huiras came home from third on a wild pitch. Huiras reached base all three plate appearances he had in the game, going 2 for 2 with a triple and a walk.
He also scored Sleepy Eye’s second run of the game in the fifth on a groundout by Carson Domeier. Domeier was 2 for 3, while Jacob Lux and Nick Mielke each added a single for Sleepy Eye.
Jordan went up 9-1 in the fourth on an RBI single from Gavin Lloyd. After Huiras came home in the fifth to make the score 9-2, Jordan put things away early in the bottom of the third with three runs. Dyrhaug had an RBI single to start the scoring in the inning, while Lloyd ended the scoring with a two-run single to right.
Jake Price took the loss for Sleepy Eye in three innings of work, giving up seven hits and four walks for eight runs while striking out four. Mason Sellner pitched 1 2/3 innings, giving up five hits and a walk for four runs.
Daak got the win for Jordan in all five innings, striking out three while giving up six hits and two walks for two runs.
