Area roundup: Waseca defeats New Ulm girls in OT

GIRLS SOCCER

Waseca 4, New Ulm 3, OT

NEW ULM — Waseca held off New Ulm 4-3 in overtime Thursday in a Big South Conference girls soccer match.

Cadence Okerman, who scored a goal in New Ulm’s Tuesday double-overtime tie with Mankato Loyola, scored two goals for New Ulm Thursday. She scored first on an assist from Kaelyn Eikanger and again in overtime. Bryn Nesvold added the Eagles’ other goal.

New Ulm had 22 shots on goal to Waseca’s 11. New Ulm goalie Ariana Dreyer had 11 saves.

New Ulm hosts Mound Westonka at noon on Saturday.

BOYS SOCCER

New Ulm 2, Waseca 1

WASECA — New Ulm edged Waseca on Thursday in a Big South Conference boys soccer match.

Nils Quist and Aaron Black each scored a goal for the Eagles. Ethan Goff had 14 saves. New Ulm had 17 shots on goal.

New Ulm will host Mound-Westonka on Saturday.

PREP VOLLEYBALL

Wabasso 3, Cathedral 1

WABASSO — Wabasso downed New Ulm Cathedral 18-25, 25-18, 25-21, 25-21 on Thursday in a Tomahawk Conference volleyball match.

Kelsey Frank had 39 set assists, Avery Carlson had 23 digs with 10 kills and Audrey Johnson added 17 digs for Wabasso. Alivia Olson also had 16 kills for Wabasso, while Natasha Doubler had eight digs and Addisyn Hillesheim had three aces.

Megan Haala had 11 kills, 18 digs and two blocks for Cathedral, while Sydnee Helget had 13 kills and three blocks, Lily Brennan had 12 kills and Jenna Hotovec had 17 digs, nine kills and two blocks. Jaylin Hartness had 12 digs and Annie Edwards had 34 set assists also for Cathedral.

Wabasso (6-5, 1-2) will participate in the Wabasso Tournament on Saturday. Cathedral (7-2, 1-1) will host Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart on Tuesday.

Sleepy Eye 3, GFW 1

WINTHROP — Sleepy Eye downed Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop 19-25, 25-17, 25-19, 29-27 in a Tomahawk Conference volleyball match on Thursday.

The Indians were led by Brook Arneson’s 25 set assists, 23 digs and two ace serves. Breaunna Mertz added 13 kills, 17 digs, two blocks and she had two ace serves. Kadence Hesse had 11 kills, 15 digs, five aces and two blocks. Sam Price had seven kills.

Katelyn Beranek led the Thunderbirds with 17 set assists and one ace serve. Brynn Busse had 11 set assists, seven kills and 18 digs, while Taylor Haas had 19 digs. Trinity Stearns and Taylor Schafer each added eight kills also for GFW, while Stearns had five blocks and Halle Bleick had four blocks.

GFW will host Lester Prairie/Holy Trinity on Monday. Sleepy Eye (9-1, 2-0) will travel to Cedar Mountain on Monday.

LCWM 3, Nicollet 0

LAKE CRYSTAL — Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial swept Nicollet 25-19, 25-16, 25-17 on Thursday in a Valley Conference volleyball match.

Mia Lambrecht had 12 set assists for the Raiders. Brooklyn Bode had five kills and Leah Bode had five kills. Shannon Soost had 13 digs and Ambria Hoffmann had 11 digs. Soost had four blocks and Tiana Sand had four blocks.

Nicollet will host Minnesota Valley Lutheran on Monday.

Springfield 3, BLHS 1

HECTOR– Springfield defeated Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart 15-22, 25-21, 12-25, 25-17 on Thursday in a Tomahawk Conference volleyball match.

Brooklyn Sturm had 16 kills and 11 digs for the Tigers. Jaeli Richert added 32 set assists with seven digs, while Brenna Pabst added eight kills and McKenna Granda added six kills. Maddy Digman had 13 digs with an ace serve while Bree Rasmussen had seven digs and three ace serves.

Springfield (1-4, 1-2) is at a tournament in Wabasso on Saturday.

Alden-Conger 3, Madelia 0

ALDEN — Alden-Conger swept Madelia 25-12, 25-10, 25-19 on Thursday in a Valley Conference volleyball match.

Jada Taylor had 11 digs for the Blackhawks. and Ashley Sorenson added 19 set assists with seven digs.

Madelia will host Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial on Thursday.

GIRLS TENNIS

Fairmont 7, New Ulm 0

FAIRMONT — Fairmont shut out New Ulm Thursday in a Big South Conference girls tennis meet.

New Ulm will host a jamboree at 9 a.m. Saturday morning.
