NEW ULM — Led by Emma Radloff’s 32.525 all-around score, the New Ulm gymnastics team opened its season on Tuesday night with a 127.95-107.75 Big South Conference win over Redwood Valley at the New Ulm Area Gymnastics Academy.

Radloff’s 32.525 all-around score was the top score at the meet. She also led all gymnasts in the vault with a top score of 8.675, was second on the beam with a 7.9 and took third on bars with a 7.45.

Radloff wasn’t the lone reason for the Eagles’ big win, however, as the Eagles ended up finishing every event in front.

New Ulm’s Josie Sellner lead all gymnasts on bars with an 8.025, while Olivia Eckstein led all gymnasts on the beam by turning in an 8.05. The Eagles also saw Ella Freiderich turn in the best floor score at the meet with 9.

“I think all of our varsity girls contributed on some events,” Eagles head coach Kortney Peterson said. “I think we had somebody different win each one of the events. We had a little bit of a struggle with bars and beam, so I do expect to see our team total go up a lot, but everybody had a positive attribute for varsity.”

Sellner finished second at the meet in all-around with a 32.225 and was second on floor with an 8.725, while Freiderich finished third in all-around with a 31.175 and second in the vault with an 8.55.

Sophia Berger took third in the vault for New Ulm with an 8.525, while Avarey Sellner took third on floor with an 8.55.

After graduating several strong leaders from last season and battling injuries and illness already this season, Peterson said she was happy with the win. However, she expects to see more from her team as the season rolls on.

“It’s definitely good to start the season off with a win,” Peterson said. “I would like to see us a little bit stronger yet. So although it was a big win, we are definitely not where we need to be for skills, so I expect to see an even bigger jump. We’re battling a lot of injury and illness, so I was happy with how tonight’s performance started us off. And everybody kind of did the best that they were able to do today.”

The Eagles trek to Mankato for a tournament on Saturday.
