NEW ULM — Jake Finstad poured in a game-high 20 points to lead three Greyhounds in double-figures as New Ulm Cathedral won their fourth straight game and two in as many days with a 60-43 win over Mayer Lutheran in a non-conference boys basketball game Saturday.

Jevan Wilfahrt added 18 and Isaac Miller ended with 11 as the Greyhounds improved to 12-13 on the season.

Josiah Clark led the Crusaders (2-23) with seven points.

“I thought that we really did a nice job offensively and we took care of the ball,” Cathedral coach Alan Woitas said. “We had very few turnovers and defensively we did a nice job of forcing them into contested jump shots — we did not give them a lot of freebees — and I was proud of our effort on that end of the floor.”

Cathedral’s defense forced the Crusaders into 21 turnovers.

More importantly, the Crusaders made only two of 17 shots from beyond the arc in the game.

The Greyhounds, who host Truman on Monday, trailed early by a 12-4 score before they got on a roll.

A 3 from Finstad would start a 16-0 run from the Greyhounds and give them a 20-12 lead.

That lead expanded to 36-24 at halftime.

Two 3s from Carter Haala and a trey from Finstad had Cathedral ahead 46-32 before the Crusaders made a mini-run to cut the lead to 48-37.

“I think that maybe in the second half is where between that 15-12 minute mark we may have lost our legs,” Woitas said. “They (Mayer) gave us everything that they had. We played two competitive games in two nights. It’s tough, especially when we do not practice on Wednesday and Thursday because of the snow. We gutted it out — it was a great group effort.”

A 3 from Miller with six minutes left in the game had the Greyhounds leading 51-37.

Mayer cut the lead to 53-43 with just over three minutes left in the game before Cathedral scored the final seven points of the game.

Woitas said that as far as seedings go for Section 2A, there could be an argument between the top three teams — Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s, BOLD and Lester Prairie– on who is one and two.

“And four through seven, you can make an argument for each team.” Woitas said. “We want to make sure we are playing good basketball, and winning four in a row hopefully bodes well for us.”
