Merseth leads MVL girls in Leg 2 of Tomahawk Conference tourney

BUFFALO LAKE — Behind Mackenzie Merseth’s strong 92, the Minnesota Valley Lutheran girls finished the second leg of the Tomahawk Conference Golf Tournament first on Wednesday at Oakdale Golf Club with a score of 418.

Merseth’s medalist score was followed by her teammate Jorga Brown, who shot a 95 for second. Sleepy Eye United, who was second on Day 2 of the meet with a 420, was led by Sam Price, who shot a 97 to finish third.

The New Ulm Cathedral girls were third with a 454, while Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart took fourth (487) and Wabasso took fifth (510). Cedar Mountain, Springfield and Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop were all incomplete for the girls side.

Taking fourth on the day for the girls was Cathedral’s Alaina Blomberg (98), while GFW’s Jenna Schweiss shot a 99 for fifth, Springfield’s Mavri Winkelmann shot a 106 to tie for sixth with SEU’s Kiara Murphy. SEU’s Chloe Walter shot a 107 to tie for eighth with Cedar Mountain’s Bailey Woodford, while Springfield’s Ava Lipetzky, BLHS’s Ava Ahlbrecht and Wabasso’s Chloe Rohlik each shot a 108 to tie for 10th.

The boys side of the second leg was won by Springfield (341), led by medalist Braiden Davis’ 79. His teammate Ben Potter shot an 82 to tie for second with Cedar Mountain’s Ryan Kevelin.

The Cathedral boys shot a 342 to take second, while Cedar Mountain was third (344), SEU was fourth (345), MVL was fifth (348), BLHS was sixth (388), GFW was seventh (397)

and Wabasso was incomplete.

MVL’s Ben Pearson shot an 83 to tie for fourth with BLHS’s Sawyer Melberg, while SEU golfers Kaleb Weiss and Nolan Kucera each shot an 84 to tie for sixth. Cathedral’s Ben Blomberg and Joey Fingland both shot an 85 with Cedar Mountain’s Blake Schueller to tie for ninth.

In the series, the SEU girls are tied with MVL for first with 15 points, while Cathedral is third with 12 points. MVL’s Brown leads the individual girls race with 39 points, while SEU’s Sam Price is second with 37 points and Blomberg is third with 33 points.

The Cathedral boys lead the series with 15 points, while Springfield is second with 13 points and MVL and SEU are tied for third with 11 points. Pearson leads the boys golfers with 35.5 points, while Kucera is second with 29.5 points and Fingland and Melberg are tied for third with 29 points.

The Tomahawk Conference Golf Tournament operates on a points system and with three legs of the tournament at different locations. The third leg of the tourney is worth double points.

The third leg of the tournament for the boys will be played Monday, May 13 at Winthrop Golf Club. The third and final leg for the girls will be played Monday, May 13 at Mayflower Golf Club in Fairfax.
