MINNETONKA — New Ulm Junior Legion downed Harrisburg, SD, 13-3 in five innings of a junior legion baseball game Thursday in a Melde Meltdown Tournament opener.

Tanner Backer got the start and earned the win in three innings, allowing three hits while striking out three. Ryan Rathmann led New Ulm at the plate, going 2 for 3 with three RBIs, while Dirk Haynes was 1 for 2 with an RBI, Hunter Larson was 1 for 1 with an RBI and Backer added two RBIs.

New Ulm (4-0) continues tournament pool play Friday against Chanhassen and Waterdown, SD.

Sleepy Eye 19,

Jackson 6 (5 innings)

JACKSON — Sleepy Eye Junior Legion ran by Jackson 19-6 on Thursday in five innings of a junior legion baseball game.

Merrick Mathiowetz was 4 for 5 with a double and three RBIs for Sleepy Eye, while Kayden Klein was 3 for 4 with a triple and four runs scored and Gavin Strong was 2 for 4 with two doubles, four RBIs and three runs scored. Cole Eckstein got the win in four innings, walking six and allowing three hits for no earned runs while striking out one.

Sleepy Eye is at Hopkins on Saturday.
