Region 2C Sunday roundup: Tigers, Lakers punch state tickets

Springfield 9, Stark 6

SLEEPY EYE — After a six-year state tournament drought, the Springfield Tigers are returning to the Class C State Amateur Baseball Tournament.

The Tigers punched their state ticket with a 9-6 win over the Stark Longhorns on Sunday at Sleepy Eye Ballpark in a Region 2C Amateur Baseball Tournament elimination bracket game.

Jordan Milbrath got the win in 3 2/3 innings of relief for Springfield, allowing three hits and a walk for two earned runs while striking out three. Tori Helget got the save in two innings, allowing one hit and no walks for no runs while striking out four. Justin Haugo got the start and went 3 1/3 innings in the no decision, allowing five hits and two walks for three earned runs while fanning four.

Adam Sellner took the loss for Stark in seven innings, allowing 17 hits and two walks for three earned runs while striking out six. Dylan Klein pitched a scoreless eighth inning.

Decker Scheffler led the Springfield bats, going 3 for 4 with a homer and two RBIs, while Ryan Sturm was 3 for 4 with a double and an RBI and Jacob Poehler was 3 for 5 with two RBIs.

Nick Labat was 4 for 4 for Stark, while Brandon Helget was 3 for 5 with two RBIs and David Surprenant added a homer.

The Tigers will take on Hanska at 7:30 p.m. Friday night in Sleepy Eye, with the winner playing New Ulm in a Region 2C semifinals game Saturday in New Ulm.

Hanska 6, Lamberton 2

SLEEPY EYE — The Hanska Lakers topped the Lamberton Long Sox 6-2 on Sunday night at Sleepy Eye Ballpark to earn a Region 2C spot in this year’s Class C State Amateur Baseball Tournament.

Eric Portner had two home runs for the Lakers at the plate to lead the way, while Kevin Larson added an RBI single. Sam Knowles got the win on the mound in relief.

No stats were provided for Lamberton.

Hanska will next play Springfield Friday night in Sleepy Eye with a trip to the Region 2C elimination finals on the line Saturday.

Courtland 12, New Ulm 2

SLEEPY EYE — The Courtland Cubs stunned the top-seeded New Ulm Brewers on Sunday afternoon with a 12-2 win in the winners’ bracket finals of the Region 2C Amateur Baseball Tournament at Sleepy Eye Ballpark.

The win moves the Cubs on to the championship at 3 p.m. Sunday in New Ulm, while New Ulm will play the winner of Saturday night’s Springfield-Hanska game at 12 p.m. Sunday in New Ulm for the right to play in the championship game.

Courtland had a run in both the first, third, fifth and seventh innings before breaking the game open with a six-run eighth. The Cubs added two more in the ninth.

Jackson Bode the complete-game win for the Cubs, allowing 13 hits and a walk for two earned runs while striking out 14.

Ethan Stade took the loss for New Ulm in six innings, allowing five hits and four walks for one earned run while striking out four. Wade French pitched two innings in relief for New Ulm and allowed eight hits for seven runs, two earned, while fanning two. Adam Nilson pitched one inning, allowing two hits and a walk for two runs while striking out one.

Nolan Drill was 3 for 4 with four RBIs to lead the Cubs at the plate, while Teddy Giefer was 3 for 5 with a homer and three RBIs and Teagan Kamm added a homer. Jaden Drill, Maddox Mortensen and Mason Cox each had two hits apiece for Courtland also.

Colton Schaefer was 3 for 4 to lead New Ulm at the plate, while Cole Ranweiler, Trevor Nissen and Cole Ranweiler each had two hits.
