Springfield/CM girls place three in top 10
WINTHROP — The Springfield/Cedar Mountain girls cross-country team opened the 2024 season with a win at Winthrop Golf Club on Friday.
Mankato Loyola took second in the girls race, while Minnesota Valley Lutheran took third.
The boys race was won by Mankato Loyola, who was followed by Madelia, Springfield/CM, MVL and St. Mary’s/Sleepy Eye/New Ulm Cathedral.
The Springfield/CM girls saw three runners in the top 10, led by Katie Thram, who took second with a time of 22:49. Marissa Pabst took third (23:14), while Lydia Dauer took sixth (23:32).
The SM/Sleepy Eye/NUC girls were led by eighth-grader Emma Hagen, who took eighth with a time of 23:57.4, while Millie Lax took 16th (25:17.2).
The MVL girls were led by Natalie Matzke, who took 15th with a time of 25:12.1, while Faith Peters took 19th (27:03.2). Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop didn’t have enough runners to complete a team score, but Madyson Steele ran for the GFW girls and led the way by taking fifth (23:31.9), while teammate Kelby Bruns took 17th (26:47.2).
Madelia’s Josiah DeMaris won the boys race (17:34.9). The Springfield/CM boys were led by Matt Groebner, who took third (18:43), while Dylan Dewitt took eighth (19:39).
The SM/Sleepy Eye/NUC boys were led by Noah Christensen (sixth, 19:13.5), Raul Rodriguez (ninth, 20:13.2) and Levi Hagen (10th, 20:17.3).
New Ulm runners get feet wet in Fairmont
FAIRMONT — In its first year back with a cross-country program, four New Ulm runners competed at the Fairmont Early-Bird Invite on Friday.
New Ulm’s Nicholes Turbes took 30th in the boys race (17:25.9), while Ezra Friese took 46th (18:57.1). The New Ulm girls saw Hadley Batt take 16th (18:51.7) in the girls race, while Megan Gauert took 26th (19:53.5).
New Ulm did not have field enough runners at the meet to qualify for team scores. The boys and girls races were both won by St. Peter.
GIRLS TENNIS
Luverne 4, New Ulm 3
LUVERNE — The New Ulm girls tennis team came up just short on Friday, falling to Luverne 4-3 in a nonconference girls tennis meet.
New Ulm’s Karlee Prahl rolled to a 6-0, 6-1 win over Emma Nath at No. 1 singles, while Carmen Schotzko defeated Sophia Remus 6-2, 6-4 at No. 3 singles and Natalie Fischer bested Bergan Aele 6-3, 6-1 at No. 4 singles. Addyson Mann defeated New Ulm’s Joci Pettersen at No. 2 singles 6-1, 6-0.
Luverne swept in doubles action.

BOYS SOCCER
SWMC 3, New Ulm 1
EDGERTON — Southwest Minnesota Christian defeated New Ulm 3-1 in a nonconference boys soccer game on Thursday.
Methodius Amoah scored the Eagles’ lone goal, assisted by Jackson Ocampo. Goalie Jens Quist had 10 saves in the game.
New Ulm hosts Mankato East on Monday.
Wabasso 3, YME 0
WABASSO — Wabasso swept Yellow Medicine East 25-17, 25-11, 25-19 Thursday in a nonconference volleyball match.
Alivia Olson led the Rabbits with 11 kills and 11 digs, while Leah Mathiowetz had eight kills and three aces. Sara Carlson had 32 set assists, while Camryn Irlbeck had five kills and five blocks.
Wabasso travels to Lakeview on Tuesday.
