Area roundup: New Ulm blanks TCU, earns Big South title game

New Ulm 1, TCU 0

MONTGOMERY — New Ulm clinched a Big South Conference title game this year with a 1-0 win over Tri-City United in a Big South Conference boys soccer game.

Jackson Ocampo had the lone goal of the game on an assist from Joshua Shaneman. Eagles goalie Jens Quist preserved the shutout with 10 saves.

New Ulm will now play for the Big South Conference championship on Oct. 3, with an official location to be determined.

PREP VOLLEYBALL

Cathedral 3, Springfield 1

SPRINGFIELD — The New Ulm Cathedral Greyhounds held off the Springfield Tigers in four sets of Tomahawk-Valley Conference, Tomahawk Division volleyball Tuesday night, winning 25-15, 25-27, 25-19, 25-23.

Cathedral was led by Shay Wilfahrt’s 17 kills, 15 digs and five blocks, while Ava Krueger had 14 kills, 11 digs and four aces. Madelyn Haala added 18 set assists and 13 digs, while Ashlyn Hillesheim had 24 digs and Abbey Hillesheim had 16 set assists.

Springfield was led by Jasmine Novotny’s 11 kills, 16 digs and two aces, while Kendall Krueger had six kills and 11 digs and Teagan Steffl and Lily Pingeon each had five kills. Taylor Roiger added 26 set assists for Springfield, while Claire Potter had 14 digs and four aces, Jada Reese had 12 digs and Emma Hauger had four kills and 10 digs.

Wabasso 3, Cedar Mountain 1

WABASSO — Wabasso defeated Cedar Mountain 25-18, 25-17, 22-25, 25-21 on Tuesday night in a Tomahawk-Valley Conference, Tomahawk Division volleyball match.

Alivia Olson led the Rabbits in the win with 16 kills, while Camryn Irlbeck had 12 kills and Kenley Guetter had nine kills and four blocks. Olivia Wall added three blocks for Wabasso, while Audrey Johnson had 16 digs, Sara Carlson had 40 set assists and Leah Mathiowetz had three aces.

Cedar Mountain was led by Reagyn Kleinschmidt’s 16 kills, 10 set assists and five blocks, while Kendra Erickson and Cloey Wildt each had four kills. Brynn Hoffbeck added 21 digs, while Aubrey Steffl had 11 digs.

Wabasso (15-7, 5-0) hosts Lester Prairie on Thursday in another Tomahawk Division matchup, while Cedar Mountain (7-4, 3-2) hosts Springfield in a Tomahawk Division match Thursday night.

LCWM 3, MVL 2

LAKE CRYSTAL — Lake Crystal Wellcome Memorial defeated Minnesota Valley Lutheran in five sets of South Central Conference volleyball Tuesday, winning 25-23, 20-25, 25-16, 22-25, 15-10.

MVL was led by Jenna Bates’ 16 kills, 11 digs and six blocks, while Marley Schauer had 14 kills, three aces and two blocks and Olivia Hammer had 14 kills, 12 digs and four aces. Avery Freier had 42 set assists and three blocks also for the Chargers, while Taryn Gunderson had 13 digs and three aces.

MVL (2-16) hosts Maple River on Thursday.

Cleveland 3, Madelia 0

MADELIA — Cleveland shut down Madelia on Tuesday in a Tomahawk-Valley Conference, Valley Division volleyball match, winning 25-11, 25-22, 25-18.

Madelia was led by Ashlynn Sweet’s eight kills, while Alicia Lugo had eight set assists, Makayla Sorenson had 10 digs, Lauryn Grev had 10 digs and Katherine DeVlaeminck had six blocks.

Madelia (6-10, 2-3) is at a tournament in St. Clair on Saturday.

MCW 3, Nicollet 1

TRIMONT — Martin County West defeated Nicollet 24-26, 25-18, 25-17, 25-13 on Tuesday in a Tomahawk-Valley Conference, Valley Division volleyball match.

Savannah Klockziem led the Raiders in defeat with nine kills, while Megan Soost had seven kills and Mia Lambrecht had 20 set assists. Leah Bode added eight digs and two blocks, while Cason Forbrook had eight digs and four aces.

Nicollet (2-11, 0-5) hosts Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton on Thursday.

BLHS 3, GFW 0

HECTOR — Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart swept Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop 25-15, 25-12, 25-10 on Tuesday in a Tomahawk-Valley Conference, Tomahawk Division volleyball match.

Trinity Stearns and Ella Nachreiner each had five kills for GFW, while Stearns added two blocks. Cheyenne Schmidt led GFW in digs with seven, while Natalie Ahlbrecht had 11 assists, six digs and two aces.

GFW (0-12, 0-5) hosts Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s on Thursday in another Tomahawk Division match.

GIRLS TENNIS

Sibley East 6, New Ulm 1

ARLINGTON — Sibley East defeated New Ul 6-1 on Tuesday in a nonconference girls tennis meet.

Karlee Prahl got New Ulm’s lone win on the day, defeating Morgan Johnson 6-1, 6-1 at No. 1 singles. Sibley East’s Morgan Heggenmiller won over New Ulm’s Carmen Schotzko 6-3, 7-6 (4) at No. 2 singles, and Sibley East’s Macey Thoele defeated Natalie Fischer 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3 singles. Sibley East’s Amelia Odenthal won 6-0, 6-0 over Lida Osborne at No. 4 singles.

Ady Beneke and Tessa McCracken took a 6-1, 6-2 win for Sibley East over Joci Pettersen and Lilly Kral at No. 1 doubles, while Sibley East’s Addie Cowell and Taylor Moos defeated Kaylee Evans and Everly Batt 6-4, 6-4 at No. 2 doubles. Emily Dose and Kylah Olson wrapped it up for Sibley East with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Natalie Schwartz and Brielle Evans at No. 3 doubles.

PREP CROSS COUNTRY

Springfield girls take first at Slayton Meet

SLAYTON — The Springfield girls cross-country team placed first at a prep cross-country meet out of 10 teams Tuesday at Slayton, with Katie Thram leading the way with a third-place finish.

Thram ran a 20:38 to take third, while Marissa Pabst placed eighth with a 21:55. Lydia Dauer took ninth with a 21:56, while Emmie McCone placed 15th with a 22:26.

Sylvia Hovland (22:36) took 18th, and Abby Groebner (23:59) placed 30th.

The Springfield boys team placed fourth in the meet, with Matt Groebner placing fifth with a time of 17:42. Luka Fernandez (18:41) placed 14th, while Dylan Dewitt (18:50) took 16th and Bryan Buerkle (19:39) placed 21st. William Griffis (20:25) placed 28th and Lucas Hensch (21:07) placed 38th, with Xavier Manderfeld (21:43) coming in 44th.
