NEW ULM — New Ulm took a 1-1 draw against Jordan Monday in a nonconference boys soccer game, battling a strong wind and a down game from the offense.

“Obviously it was pretty rough,” New Ulm head coach Timothy Plocher said. “I think we were definitely the better team. The wind was a factor, but it was a factor for both sides. The only way they could score was with a penalty kick … We were lacking on the attack. We wanted to do too many through balls, and we worked too much on that. We should have worked a bit more on getting to the corners and crossing.”

Neither team got much pressure on offense early in the first half, with New Ulm working against the wind to start, until Daniel Brownfield took advantage of a scrambling goalie in the 31st minute to score, assisted by Jackson Ocampo. After the goal, New Ulm saw more consistency putting on offensive pressure, getting a few more shots off, but was unable to create another goal before halftime.

The wind died down in the early second half, giving way to more normal play. However, New Ulm was called for a hand ball in the goalie box, giving Jordan an opportunity for a penalty kick. New Ulm goalkeeper Jens Quist got a finger on the ball, but couldn’t quite get the save as Brayden Davis scored in the bottom-left corner in the 48th minute.

The wind picked up again as the game moved on, and New Ulm had several more chances to score, notably with 10 minutes left in the game as Ocampo put several moves on the ball inside the box, but his shot was deflected by a Jordan defender. Frustration mounted late in the game for both teams, to the point where Davis was sent off with a red card with 1:49 to play in the game. New Ulm was unable to capitalize on the missing man, however, as the game ended in a tie.

New Ulm (11-2-1) now plays in the Big South Conference Championship game on Tuesday, hosting Marshall, one of its two losses on the season.

“We have a big conference game tomorrow,” Plocher said. “We know how they play, we watch film. We’re ready for them.”
