Thunderbirds’ season comes to end in 2A semifinals

LESTER PRAIRIE — Top-seeded Lester Prairie downed No. 4-seeded Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop 39-6 on Saturday afternoon in a Section 2A Football Tournament semifinal game.

Regie Mattes scored GFW’s lone touchdown of the day on a pick-6 of 53 yards in the third quarter to have his team down 31-6. Thunderbirds running back Owen Swenson was held to nine rushes for 19 yards, while Mattes had 10 carries for 16 yards and Garrett Stegeman had five carries for 15 yards.

GFW quarterback Cole Jacobson completed three passes, all to Dominic Krumwiede for 7 yards. Matthew Lee was in on eight total tackles to lead the GFW defense, while Jose Farias had six tackles, three for a loss.

GFW ends its season with a 3-7 record, while Lester Prairie improves to 6-3 and will meet No. 2-seeded United South Central in the 2A championship game Friday night at New Prague High School.
