NEW ULM — New Ulm gymnastics team earned a win in its first home meet of the season, topping Redwood Valley 130.425 to 122.925 Tuesday at the New Ulm Recreation Center.

New Ulm head coach Kortney Peterson said she saw some more precise routines from the team in this meet compared to the season opener on Saturday.

“Our biggest strengths were probably floor and vault today,” New Ulm head coach Kortney Peterson said. “We cleaned up our routines a little bit from Saturday. We had a few little mishaps and some technical errors that we were able to correct today.”

Josie Sellner won the meet for the Eagles, finishing with an all-around score of 34.05 after taking first on the floor (9.125) and the beam (8.55) while finishing second on bars (8.075) and sixth on vault (8.3).

Also for New Ulm, Alaina Blomberg finished third all-around with a score of 32.15, taking second on beam (8.275) fourth on bars (7.125) and the floor (8.3) and fifth on vault (8.45). Sophia Berger placed fourth in all-around with a 32.075, placing second on the floor (8.85) and fifth on bars (7.1) and beam (7.925) and Avarey Sellner placed fifth all-around (24.55) with a second-place finish in vault (8.5) and a third-place finish on the floor (8.7).

Peterson said the team still needed to see some improved scores on the bars, which will be their biggest area of growth this season.

“We definitely need to work on our bars,” she said. “Definitely the one area that’s going to need the most work. We’re at a great starting place, but I definitely would like to see some improvement.”

New Ulm also got a strong contribution from some of its younger gymnasts, notably freshman Matilda Klawitter, who placed sixth all around (24.425), with her best events being the vault (8.475) and the beam (8.25), taking third in both events.

“I think it’s just a lot of nerves at that varsity level,” Peterson said. “Each meet that we have now, we’re gaining a little bit of confidence and improving on our skills.”

New Ulm is in action next at Waseca on Tuesday.
