New Ulm tops Dodge County

NEW ULM — The New Ulm Eagles took down Dodge County to a 5-3 win at the New Ulm Civic Center in nonconference boys hockey Saturday.

Five different Eagles scored goals with Keaton Weston, Jackson Griebel, Josh Forstner, Ian Brudelie and Brody Wenner earning goals.

Griebel, Weston, Josh Forstner, Brecken Neuman and Brody Nordy all got helpers.

New Ulm goaltender Jayden Grunst was stellar in net, stopping 43 of 47 Wildcats shots.

The Eagles had taken a 1-0 lead at the 12:21 mark of the first period when Griebel found Weston with a perfect pass for a pretty back-door shot that beat Dodge County goalie Wes Wagner.

But the Wildcats tied the game at the 1:12 mark of the second period on the first of two goals from Gabe Coshenet and gave Dodge County life.

But what happened in the next seven minutes was what New Ulm coach Ryan Neuman was huge.

First it was a goal from Caleb Forstner that came off an assist from Weston just 38 seconds after Coshenet’s score.

That was followed by an unassisted goal off of the stick of Josh Forstner that bounced off of the glove of Wagner for a goal at the 6:56 mark.

Just over a minute later it was a power-play goal courtesy of a pass from Nordy to Brudelie, who made it a 4-1 New Ulm lead.

“We also weathered the storm in that [second] period as the were generating quite a few shots (outshooting New Ulm 23-10) on us,” Neuman said. “We had some good, quality shots and Jayden made some good saves in that second period to keep us in it.”

Grunst made some huge saves including stopping Dodge County’s Camryn Koch, who broke in on Grunst all alone but was stopped.

Wenner’s goal coming early in the third period on assists from Josh Forstner and Neuman, had the Eagles leading 5-1.

But Dodge County scored twice to cut the lead to 5-3 and then pulled Wagner for an extra attacker with a minute left in the game but failed to score.

The Eagles, 4-2, are at Waseca on Tuesday in a Big South Conference meeting.
