Cedar Mountain 82 Cleveland 69

CLEVELAND — Blake Steffl scored his 1,000th career point in Cedar Mountain’s 82-69 win over Cleveland on Tuesday in a Tomahawk-Valley Conference crossover boys basketball game.

Steffl finished with 18 points, eight rebounds and 12 assists. Blake Scheuller led the Cougars with 31 points and 14 rebounds. Zach Sandgren added 26 points.

Cedar Mountain (6-0, 4-0) will host Sleepy Eye (4-2, 3-1) on Friday.

Sleepy Eye 70, BLHS 40

SLEEPY EYE — Sleepy Eye cruised past Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart 70-40 on Tuesday in a Tomahawk-Valley Conference, Tomahawk Division boys basketball game.

Landon Wendinger led Sleepy Eye with 23 points, 18 rebounds and four blocks. Eric Lozano had 23 points, three rebounds and three steals, while Brayden Heiderscheidt scored 8 points with nine assists and six steals.

Sleepy Eye (4-2, 3-1) will host Nicollet on Thursday. BLHS (0-5, 0-3) will host Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop on Friday.

MVL 70, GFW 56

WINTHROP — Minnesota Valley Lutheran took down Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop 70-56 on Tuesday night in a nonconference boys basketball game.

MVL was led by Eric Sorenson’s 13 points, while Connor Bode had 10 points and Brennan Bendix added 8 points.

Cole Jacobson led GFW with 28 points, while Easton Taylor had 10 points.

MVL (3-3) begins play in the Kwik-Trip Holiday Tournament at Bethany Lutheran College on Dec. 26, while GFW (2-3) is in Hector on Friday night.

Wabasso 78, St. Mary’s 70

WABASSO — Wabasso held off Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s 78-70 on Tuesday night in a Tomahawk-Valley Conference, Tomahawk Division boys basketball game.

Brayden Guetter led Wabasso with 31 points, seven rebounds and five assists. Caden Frericks added 11 points and 19 rebounds for the Rabbits, while Joe Rohlik had 9 points and four assists.

No statistics were reported for St. Mary’s.

Wabasso (4-2, 2-2) is at New Ulm Cathedral for a 7:30 p.m. game Friday night, while St. Mary’s (2-5, 0-3) hosts Lester Prairie on Thursday night.

Madelia 67, MCW 60

MADELIA — Madelia topped Martin County West 67-60 on Tuesday night in a Tomahawk-Valley Conference, Valley Division boys basketball game.

Kaydon Firchau led Madelia with 18 points, while Hayden Jones added 17 points, all coming in the second half. Tate Becker added 11 points and 14 rebounds for the Blackhawks, while Josiah DeMaris had 11 points and Kyle Pietsch had 10 rebounds,

Madelia (5-0, 3-0) hosts Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Truman/Martin Luther on Thursday night.

Sibley East 59, TCU 54

MONTGOMERY — Sibley East downed Tri-City United 59-54 in a nonconference boys basketball game on Tuesday.

Riley Bussler led the Wolverines with 17 points, four rebounds and three steals, while Quinten DeVlaeminck had 12 points, five rebounds and two steals. Ezra Weber added 10 points and four rebounds.

Sibley East (2-3) play at Blue Earth Area in a tournament on Friday, Dec. 27.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

MVL 54, GFW 45

NEW ULM — Minnesota Valley Lutheran defeated Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop on Tuesday in a Tomahawk-Valley Conference, Tomahawk Division girls basketball game.

Ziva Zahrt led the Chargers with 18 points and eight rebounds. Avery Freier scored 15 points and added three assists and she had two steals, while Avery Hahn had 10 points, 20 rebounds and two steals. Olivia Hammer added 9 points and four rebounds.

MVL (7-0, 1-0) will play against New Richland-Heartland-Elllendale-Geneva at 4 p.m. on Friday at Norwood-Young America. GFW (2-7, 1-4) will host Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart on Thursday.

Lester Prairie 72, New Ulm Cathedral 47

LESTER PRAIRIE — Lester Prairie defeated New Ulm Cathedral on Tuesday in a nonconference girls basketball game.

Jayde Altermatt led the Greyhounds with 27 points. Shay Wilfahrt and Maddie Gilles each scored 8 points.

Cathedral (0-7, 0-3) will host Wabasso on Friday.

St. Mary’s 93 Wabasso 24

WABASSO– Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s remained perfect with a 93-24 win over Wabasso on Tuesday in a Tomahawk-Valley Conference, Tomahawk Division girls basketball game.

Morgan Mathiowetz led St. Mary’s with 30 points, eight rebounds and seven assists. Olivia Schieffert had 23 points, five rebounds and six steals. Natalie Fischer added 14 points, three assists and three steals. Brynne Ibberson had 13 points, five assists and six steals.

Elizabeth Morin led Wabasso with 7 points and Anastasia Smith scored 6 points.

St. Mary’s (7-0, 5-0) will host Sibley East on Friday. Wabasso (0-6, 0-3) will play at New Ulm Cathedral on Friday.

Sleepy Eye 64, BLHS 31

HECTOR — Sleepy Eye downed Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart 64-31 on Tuesday in a Tomahawk-Valley Conference, Tomahawk Division girls basketball game.

Kayla Hecht led Sleepy Eye with 14 points, four rebounds and two steals. Taylor Berkner had 11 points, five rebounds and four steals. Sam Price added 11 points, seven rebounds, and three blocks. Paige Haala had 10 points and five assists.

Sleepy Eye (4-5, 4-1) will host Nicollet on Thursday. BLHS (3-4, 1-3) will play at Gibbon-Farfax-Winthrop on Thursday.

Cedar Mountain 55, Springfield 53

MORGAN — Cedar Mountain edged Springfield 55-53 on Tuesday in a Tomahawk-Valley Conference, Tomahawk Division girls basketball game.

Aubrey Steffl led the Cougars with 32 points, eight rebounds and five steals. Grace Hamre added 15 points, seven rebounds and three steals. Miley Renville had 4 points and six rebounds.

Emma Hauger led the Tigers with 13 points, Olivia Milbrath had 11 points and eight rebounds and Jasmine Novotny added 8 points and eight rebounds..

Cedar Mountain (6-2, 3-1) will travel to Sleepy Eye on Friday. Springfield (3-3, 1-2) will play at Lester Prairie on Friday.

Madelia 63, Medford 60 (OT)

MEDFORD — Madelia defeated Medford 63-60 in overtime in a nonconference girls basketball game.

Alicia Lugo led the Blackhawks with 28 points, seven rebounds and four assists, while Katherine DeVlaeminck had 16 points and seven rebounds. Ashlynn Sweet added 7 points and nine rebounds.

Madelia (2-7) hosts Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Truman/Martin Luther on Thursday.

PREP GYMNASTICS

New Ulm 131.975, Waseca 131.9

WASECA — New Ulm held off Waseca on Tuesday night in a Big South Conference gymnastics meet 131.975-131.9.

Leading New Ulm was Josie Sellner, who took second all-around with a 33.975, while Sophia Berger took third all-around with a 32.775. Sellner finished first on beam (8.825), second on bars (8.25) and fifth in the floor routine (8.525), while Berger took second on beam (8.8) and second in the floor routine (8.675).

Also for New Ulm, Alaina Blomberg took fourth on bars (7.3) and fourth on beam (8.525).

Avarey Sellner took third on beam (8.75), third in the floor (8.65) and fourth in the vault (8.475), while Isabelle Longtin took fifth in the vault with an 8.4.

Waseca’s Bella Wikan took first all-around with a 35.9.

BOYS HOCKEY

Waseca 3, New Ulm 2

WASECA — Waseca’s scored late in the third period to top New Ulm 3-2 in a Big South Conference boys hockey game on Tuesday night.

New Ulm’s Ian Brudelie and Breckan Neuman scored the goals for New Ulm, while Talan Helget, Brody Wenner and Brody Nordby each had an assist. Jayden Grunst had 37 saves in the game.

New Ulm (4-4, 3-3) travels to Minnesota River on Thursday.

PREP WRESTLING

Springfield hosts quad

SPRINGFIELD — The Springfield Tigers hosted a prep wrestling quad on Tuesday night, falling to Wabasso 66-10, Sibley East 48-30 and Fulda/Murray County Central 66-6.

Picking up wins for Springfield on the night was Brett Jensen (107), who won two matches, and Cole Paplow (127), who also won two matches. Carlos Rangel (114), Nick Groebner (139) and Rylee Haala (189) also each won a match for the Tigers.

Wabasso defeated Springfield 66-10 and fell to F/MCC 41-27. No score or statistics were reported for the Sibley East-Wabasso dual.

Lane Taylor (114), Braedan Ricketts (121), Zach Skoblik (133), Mikale Goblirsch (139), Kaysen Harms (152), Mason Kampsen (215) and Josh Timm each got a pin for the Rabbits against Springfield. Taylor and Harms also got pins against F/MCC.
