Weekend area roundup: Eagles girls down Winona Cotter

GIRLS BASKETBALL

WINONA — The New Ulm Eagles girls basketball team finished their time at a Winona State girls basketball invite 2-0 after running by Winona Cotter 83-53 on Saturday.

The Eagles beat Rochester John Marshall on Friday at Winona State.

In Saturday’s win, New Ulm was led by Maddie Backer’s 16 points, while Brooklyn Lewis had 13 points. Maggie Joyce added 12 points for the Eagles, while Betsy Joyce chipped in 11.

New Ulm (6-4) host Worthington on Jan. 7.

NYA 75, MVL 58

NORWOOD YOUNG AMERICA — Minnesota Valley Lutheran fell to Norwood Young America 75-58 on Saturday in a nonconference girls basketball game.

Avery Freier led MVL with 21 points and four rebounds, while Olivia Hammer had 19 points, five steals and three rebounds. Ziva Zahrt added 12 points and three steals for the Chargers, who dropped to 7-2 on the season with the loss.

MVL is at Sibley East for a South Central Conference game on Jan. 9.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Nicollet 78, YME 63

LAKEVIEW — Nicollet defeated Yellow Medicine East 78-63 in a nonconference boys basketball game Saturday on the final day of a Lakeview Holiday Tournament.

Carson Kettner led Nicollet with 22 points and 13 rebounds, while Henry Oscarson added 16 points and seven rebounds. Keegan Hulke added 14 points for the Raiders, while Henry Kennedy had 12 points and AJ Kramer had 8 points and eight rebounds.

Nicollet (3-5) are at Sleepy Eye this Saturday for a 2:30 p.m. Tomahawk-Valley Conference crossover game.

Edgerton 71,

Sleepy Eye 55

TYLER — Sleepy Eye dropped a nonconference boys basketball game to Edgerton 71-55 on Saturday on the final day of a Russell-Tyler-Ruthton basketball invite.

Landon Wendinger led Sleepy Eye with 16 points and 11 rebounds, while Brayden Heiderscheidt added 12 points, six rebounds and four steals.

Sleepy Eye (4-5) hosts Nicollet on Saturday for a 2:30 p.m. Tomahawk-Valley Conference crossover game.

BEA 67, Sibley East 58

BLUE EARTH — Sibley East fell to Blue Earth Area 67-58 on Saturday on the final day of a boys basketball invite at BEA.

Quintin DeVlaeminck led the Wolverines in defeat with 17 points, while Riley Bussler had 12 points, Ezra Webber had 10 points and Jack Feterl added 7.

Sibley East (3-4) is at New Ulm Cathedral for a Thursday night nonconference game.

BOYS HOCKEY

Osseo 4, New Ulm 1

PROCTOR — New Ulm fell to Osseo 4-1 on Saturday in a boys hockey invite game in Proctor.

Carson Uecker scored the lone goal for New Ulm on an assist by Josh Forstner.

The Eagles were outshot 36-25 in the game, getting 32 saves from goalie Jayden Grunst.

GIRLS HOCKEY

New Ulm 2, St. Cloud 2

SARTELL — New Ulm tied with St. Cloud 2-2 on Saturday in a Sartell Holiday Tournament girls hockey game Saturday.

Eagles goalie Ava Brennan stopped 49 shots in net as the Eagles were outshot 51-22 in the game.

Mya Hornick and Madalynn Olson each had a goal for New Ulm, with Tristyn Wolner and Abby Forstner each adding an assist.
