Area roundup: Greyhounds rebound, Rabbits hold off Bulldogs

BOYS BASKETBALL

Cathedral 80, BLHS 42

HECTOR — The New Ulm Cathedral Greyhounds bounced back from a narrow loss on Thursday to Sibley East at home by taking down Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart 80-42 on Friday in a Tomahawk-Valley Conference, Tomahawk Division boys basketball game.

Eli Anderson led the Greyhounds with 23 points, while Jake Finstad had 22 points, six rebounds and three steals. Colin Anderson added 10 points for Cathedral, while Rylan Koopmann had 8 points and Brock Carlson had 4 points and nine rebounds.

No statistics were reported for BLHS.

Cathedral (4-4, 4-1) travels to Morgan to take on undefeated Cedar Mountain on Tuesday night. BLHS (0-9, 0-5) hosts Springfield on Tuesday night.

Wabasso 71,

Lester Prairie 66

LESTER PRAIRIE — The Wabasso Rabbits won for the second consecutive night with a 71-66 win over Lester Prairie in a Tomahawk-Valley Conference, Tomahawk Division boys basketball game Friday night.

Calvin Hanna was one of four players in double figures for the Rabbits, now 7-3 overall and 4-2 in the conference, as he led with 20 points. Tavyn Larson had 12 points, while Caden Frericks had 11 points and Jack Burns added 10 points. Brayden Guetter added 8 points for Wabasso, while Joe Rohlik had 7.

Lester Prairie (2-8, 0-5) was led by Devin Bahr’s 27 points, while LaDamien Gatlin-Coellner had 12 points and Anthony Suess had 10.

Springfield 91, GFW 36

SPRINGFIELD — The Springfield Tigers ran past Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop 91-36 on Friday night in a Tomahawk-Valley Conference, Tomahawk Division boys basketball game.

Bryan Buerkle led the Tigers in their second win in consecutive nights with 22 points, 11 rebounds, four assists and three steals, while Brayden Sturm had 18 points, 11 rebounds, four assists and five steals. Madden Lendt added 15 points and six assists for Springfield, while Isaac Fredin had 11 points, Parker Kuehn had 10 points, six rebounds and four steals and Dylan Simonson added 9 points.

This was the fourth win a row for Springfield.

No statistics were reported for GFW.

Springfield (7-1, 4-1) travels to Hector to play Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart on Tuesday night, while GFW (3-4, 1-2) hosts Sleepy Eye on Monday.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Sleepy Eye 75, GHEC 59

SLEEPY EYE — Sleepy Eye downed Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Truman/Martin Luther 75-59 on Friday night in a Tomahawk-Valley Conference girls basketball crossover game.

Paige Haala led the Indians in the win with 20 points, five rebounds and three steals, while Taylor Berkner had 19 points, four rebounds, four assists and six steals. Jaelynn Schauman added 13 points, four rebounds and two steals, while Cadence Okerman had 12 points and five steals.

Sleepy Eye (7-5) hosts Nicollet Saturday afternoon.

Redwood Valley 60, Springfield 54

REDWOOD FALLS — Springfield fell to Redwood Valley 60-54 on Thursday night in nonconference girls basketball action.

Emma Hauger led the Tigers in the loss with 22 points, five rebounds and four steals, while Jada Reese had 11 points. Kendall Krueger added 8 points and five rebounds, while Olivia Milbrath had 5 points and eight rebounds.

Hutchinson 6,

New Ulm 1

HUTCHINSON — Hutchinson topped New ulm 6-1 in a nonconference boys hockey game on Friday.

Brody Nordby scored the lone goal for New Ulm, assisted by Hunter Larson and Ian Brudelie. Graham Glaser had 11 saves in the game.

New Ulm (5-6) travels to Mound Westonka on Tuesday.
