Area roundup: Short-handed New Ulm gymnastics team holds off BEA

PREP GYMNASTICS

New Ulm 132.525, BEA 126.35

NEW ULM — A short-handed New Ulm gymnastics team held off Blue Earth Area 132.525-126.35 in a Big South Conference gymnastics meet.

New Ulm, who has senior Josie Sellner and junior Avarey Sellner dealing with injuries, managed to get enough help from other gymnasts to secure the win Thursday. Josie Sellner and Avarey Sellner did compete Thursday, but only in some events.

New Ulm’s Sophia Berger finished first all-around at the meet with a score of 33.825, while teammates Isabelle Longtin finished fourth all-around (30.45) and Matilda Klawitter took fifth all-around (25.8). Klawitter was second in the vault (8.75), while Berger was third (8.65) and Avarey Sellner was fourth (8.625). Also for New Ulm in the vault, Ainsley Tess took fifth (8.425).

Josie Sellner took second on bars (8.025) and fourth on beam (8.325), while Berger was first on beam (8.775), first in the floor exercise (9.25) and fifth on bars (7.15). Klawitter was third on beam (8.35) and fourth in the floor (8.7). Avarey Sellner also took second in the floor (9.05), while Alaina Blomberg took third in the floor (8.8).

New Ulm is back home to host Jackson County Central at 6 p.m. Tuesday.

GIRLS HOCKEY

New Ulm 3, Delano/Rockford 2

DELANO — New Ulm took down Delano/Rockford 3-2 in a nonconference girls hockey game on Thursday.

Jersey Haugen scored twice for New Ulm and added an assist, while Mya Hornick had a goal and an assist. Trystyn Wolner and Maddy Portner each had an assist in the game.

New Ulm (7-10-1) hosts Mankato West on Saturday for New Ulm Hockey Day.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Cedar Mountain 41, HLO/F 38

MORGAN — Cedar Mountain topped Heron Lake-Okabena/Fulda 41-38 in a nonconference girls basketball game on Thursday.

Aubrey Steffl recored her fourth triple-double of the year with 16 points, 15 rebounds, 10 steals and five assists, while Kendra Erickson had 16 points, nine rebounds and four steals. Brooklyn Diehn added 6 points, three rebounds and two steals.

Cedar Mountain (10-4) travels to Wabasso on Friday.

St. Mary’s 65, BLHS 33

SLEEPY EYE — Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s downed Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart 65-33 in a Tomahawk-Valley Conference, Tomahawk Division girls basketball game Thursday.

Morgan Mathiowetz led the Knights with 30 points, eight steals and five rebounds, while Brynne Ibberson had 14 points, seven steals, three rebounds and three assists. Olivia Schieffert added 7 points, seven steals and three rebounds.

Jamie Novotny led the Mustangs with 11 points, while Lily Hubin had 8 points.

St. Mary’s (12-0, 8-0) plays at Sleepy Eye on Tuesday. BLHS (5-6, 2-5) hosts Atwater-Comos-Grove City on Monday.

Sibley East 56, MVL 55

ARLINGTON — Sibley East downed Minnesota Valley Lutheran on a buzzer beater in a South Central Conference girls basketball game on Thursday.

Bethany Reierson led Sibley East with 18 points.

Avery Freier led MVL with 23 points, four assists, four steals and four rebounds, while Olivia Hammer had 1 points, three steals and three rebounds. Avery Hahn added 8 points and three rebounds.

Sibley East (5-10, 1-1) hosts Nicollet on Friday. MVL (7-3, 1-1) hosts Martin County WEst on Saturday.

MCW 70, Madelia 24

MADELIA — Martin County West defeated Madelia 70-24 in a Tomahawk-Valley Conference, Valley Division girls basketball game on Thursday.

G Tatro led the Blackhawks with 8 points and three rebounds, while J Sanchez had 7 points.

Madelia (2-10, 0-6) travels to Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop on Monday.

BOYS BASKETBALL

ST. Mary’s 85, BLHS 39

HECTOR — Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s rolled by Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart 85-39 in a Tomahawk-Valley Conference, Tomahawk Division boys basketball game Thursday.

George Schwint led the Knights with 19 points and four assists, while Adam Steffensmeier had 13 points, six assists and four steals. Michael Balko added 13 points, and Tyler Mathiowetz had 10 points and five steals.

Cameron McColley had 8 points for the Mustangs.

St. Mary’s (4-7, 1-5) hosts Sleepy Eye on Monday. BLHS (0-11, 0-7) hosts BOLD on Saturday.

USC 67, Nicollet 57

NICOLLET — United South Central downed Nicollet 67-57 in a nonconference boys basketball game on Thursday.

Carson Kettner led the Raiders with 12 points, five rebounds, while Keegan Hulke had 11 points, six rebounds and five assists. Henry Oscarson added 9 points and five rebounds, and Henry Kennedy had 9 points.

Nicollet (3-8) travels to Alden-Conger/Glenville-Emmons on Monday.

WABASSO — Wabasso split a home wrestling triangular on Thursday, defeating Sibley East 46-27 and falling to Benson 35-33.
