Area Roundup: Backer scores 30 as Eagles win over Tigers

GIRLS BASKETBALL

New Ulm 92, Belle Plaine 64

BELLE PLAINE — New Ulm cruised by Belle Plaine 92-64 in a Big South Conference girls basketball game on Friday.

Maddie Backer led the Eagles with 30 points, while Morgan Hulke had 22 points. Ramsey Hopp had 12 points also for New Ulm and McKenna Hulke had 10 points in the game.

New Ulm (7-4, 4-2) travels to Mankato East on Tuesday.

Springfield 66, Sleepy Eye 63

SPRINGFIELD — Springfield defeated Sleepy Eye 66-63 Friday in a Tomahawk-Valley Conference, Tomahawk Division girls basketball game.

Emma Hauger paced the Tigers with 19 points, while Jada Reese had 14 points, five rebounds and five assists. Olivia Milbrath added 11 points for Springfield.

Paige Haala led the Indians with 23 points, seven rebounds and five assists, while Cadence Okerman had 18 points, eight rebounds, six steals and five assists. Kayla Hecth added 11 points for Sleepy Eye.

Springfield (8-4, 6-2) hosts New Ulm Cathedral on Tuesday, while Sleepy Eye (9-6, 6-2) hosts Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s on Tuesday.

Cedar Mountain 73, Wabasso 54

WABASSO — Cedar Mountain downed Wabasso 73-54 in a Tomahawk-Valley Conference, Tomahawk Division boys basketball game on Friday.

Aubrey Steffl led the Cougars with 29 points, 10 rebounds, seven assists and four steals, while Grace Hamre had 13 points, four rebounds, three assists and three steals. Kendra Erickson added 10 points and 11 rebounds.

Leah Mathiowetz led Wabasso with 11 points, while Sara Carlson had 9 points and Ava Saymn had 7 points.

BOYS BASKETBALL

GFW 64, Cathedral 39

WINTHROP — GIbbon-Fairfax-Winthrop took down New Ulm Cathedral 64-39 on Friday night in a Tomahawk-Valley Conference, Tomahawk Division boys basketball game.

Cole Jacobson led the way for the Thunderbirds in the win with 21 points, while Easton Taylor had 16 points and Owen Swenson had 14.

Cathedral was led by Eli Anderson’s 12 points, while Jake Finstad added 10.

GFW (4-6, 2-3) is at Wabasso on Monday, while Cathedral (4-6, 4-3) hosts Springfield on Tuesday.

Madelia 74, Alden-Conger 57

ALDEN — Madelia moved to 10-0 on the season with a 74-57 win over Alden-Conger on Friday night in a Tomahawk-Valley Conference, Valley Division boys basketball game.

Kaydon Firchau led Madelia with 23 points, while Hayden Jones had 18 points. Kyle Pietsch had 16 points and 12 rebounds also for the Blackhawks, who are at Cleveland for another conference game on Monday.

NUA goes 2-0 at JCC meet

JACKSON — New Ulm Area downed Redwood Valley 54-10 and Luverne 60-12 in a prep wrestling invite at Jackson County Central.

Reagan Johnson, Chase Wilson, Kane Johnson, Teagan Kral, Elijah Rieser, Braxton Kieker, Candon Briggs, Wyatt Pollard, Lane Ruch, Jamisen Frederickson and Emerson Johnson all picked up two wins on the day.

Madelia splits Fulda triangular

FULDA — Madelia went 1-1 in a prep wrestling triangular Thursday at Fulda, defeating Quad County 53-21 and falling to Fulda/Murray County Central 39-29.

Beck Johnson earned two wins in the meet with a pin at 127, while Noel Davila earned two wins, one at 145 and one at 139, both by technical fall. Talyn Tande picked up two wins with a pin at 152.
