Eagles fall to Belle Plaine in double OT

NEW ULM — Belle Plaine used a 9-0 run to erase an 86-83 New Ulm lead and went on to top the Eagles 92-86 Friday night in double overtime in a Big South Conference boys basketball game.

Ethan Martin led the Tigers (8-2, 5-1) with 38 points — 7 of them coming in the second overtime.

Mitchell Hopp led New Ulm (2-9, 0-7) with 22 points. Zach Hubbard added 19 points and Levi Hopp chipped in 11.

“I am so proud of our guys,” New Ulm head coach Matt Dennis said. “This is the kind of team that we know that we have — scrappy and has that never-say-die attitude. We were down 21 early in the second half and just kept chipping away.”

The Eagles, who host Mankato East on Monday, trailed the Tigers 38-33 at halftime before Belle Plaine came out of the locker room and outscored the Eagles 18-2 to take a 56-35 lead.

Dennis said that in that run that Belle Plaine was pounding the ball inside.

“And it caused some shifting on our defense and they were knocking down some shots,” he said. “We called a timeout and it did not slow them down to much. But from that point on we made an effort to take them out of what they were trying to do.”

New Ulm cut the lead to 58-44 on a Hubbard basket.

Down 63-44, the Eagles went on a 13-0 run to slice the lead to 63-57. Three-pointers from Nick Risen, Mitchell Hopp and Owen Castleman sparked the run.

“We had a pretty nice number of assists — we made that extra pass — we had that drive to the baseline and kick across,” Dennis said. “We played as a team.”

New Ulm came all the way back to tie the game at 69 on two Hubbard free throws to send the game into the first overtime.

The Eagles took a 76-71 lead on a baskets from Risen, Joey Wise and a 3 from Mitchell Hopp, but Belle Plaine came back to tie the game at 80-80, forcing a second extra session where it secured the win.

“I told them after the game about how proud of them I am, but they are too competitive to see that right now,” Dennis said. “This effort speaks volumes for where we are going and we like the direction that we are headed.”
