NEW ULM — Albert Lea’s Connor Pirsig’s power-play goal at the 3:09 mark of the third period tied New Ulm at 3-3 Tuesday night.

That score held up through the third period and an eight-minute overtime as the Tigers and the Eagles skated to a 3-3 tie in a nonconference boys hockey game.

Brody Nordby had two goals for New Ulm, now 8-6-1. Hunter Larson added a goal also for the Eagles.

Carson Uecker had two assists for New Ulm, with Kaden Klein getting a helper.

Pirsig had two goals for Albert Lea, now 8-5-1.

New Ulm netminder Jayden Grunst stopped 27 of 30 New Ulm shots.

“This was a good battle between two teams that played hard,” Eagles head coach Ryan Neuman said. “We did not get a winner tonight, but I thought that we rebounded very well after being down two goals.”

After a scoreless first 17 minutes. Albert Lea grabbed a 2-0 leads on goals from Ethan Stieler and Pirsig less than three minutes apart.

But the Eagles, who play at Worthington Thursday before hosting Rochester Lourdes Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m., scored three goals, with two of them coming off of the stick of Nordby and coming 27 seconds apart to tie the game a 2-2.

Larson then gave New Ulm a 3-2 lead when he beat Tigers goalie Ledger Stadheim at the 15:18 mark.

“We responded well to being down two goals,” Neuman said. “And we took it to them in that second period for a while.”

But a five-minute major late in the second period and carried over to the third period resulted in Pirsig’s second goal and a 3-3 tie.

“We gave up that power play with 33 seconds left on that five minute major,” Neuman said.

“This game was back and forth all game,” Neuman said. “That first period was a neutral zone battle (New Ulm had four shots on net and Albert Lea had five). But after that the game went back and forth — both goalies made some good saves — and we had some chances to bury some pucks.

“And one of their defensemen laid down in the crease and blocked a shot and saved the game for them as he made the save of the game. It was a good battle. We talk about tight games like this and it was a good hockey game by both teams.”
