Knights stay undefeated at home with OT win

NEW ULM — Martin Luther College came up clutch as the Knights pulled away for a 72-68 win over the University of Northwestern Wednesday in an Upper Midwest Athletic Conference women’s basketball game.

Northwestern initially overcame a 10-point deficit late in the second to tie the game at the end of regulation, but MLC was able to take care of business to stay undefeated at home.

Mya Morris led the Knights with 19 points on five made 3-pointers, four rebounds and four assists, while Lydia Feidt had 16 points and 10 rebounds. Ava Stein scored 12 points, 6 in overtime, along with six rebounds, and Emma Dorn scored 10 points with 12 rebounds.

MLC stared out white-hot from 3 in the first quarter, hitting five of its eight shots from beyond the arc, with made 3-pointers from Lauren Paulson, Morris, Dorn, Anna Kieselhorst and Ella Walz in a well-balanced attack. This resulted in the Knights taking a 23-12 lead at the end of the first quarter.

MLC cooled off quickly in the second quarter, only scoring 7 more points before the half as the Eagles chipped into the lead. Still, MLC played well enough to go into halftime with a 30-27 lead.

Morris hit another 3-ponter to get the Knights going again in the second half, and a stepback 3-pointer by Morris saw MLC up 38-32. The Knights continued to push for a 47-39 lead on a 3-pointer from Feidt, and that score continued into the fourth quarter with Feidt following her own miss for a putback to extend the lead to double-digits. The lead stayed around 10 for the majority of the fourth quarter, but Northwestern made a flurry of 3-pointers late, hitting four 3-pointers in the fourth quarter, including a game-tying shot from Taylor Christenson with 4.9 seconds on the clock to send the game into overtime.

Stein set the mood in extra time with a putback, and after Northwestern tied it up with a midrange jumper, Dorn followed with another putback. Offensive rebounding continued to be key for MLC in overtime as the Knights built the lead back up to 71-65 on a layup by Stien Northwestern once again hit a 3-pointer with 35.4 seconds remaining to make it a one-score game. The Eagles had three chances to hit a 3-pointer as they collected two offensive rebounds on the final possession, but none of them fell as MLC escaped with the win.

MLC (9-4) host UW-Superior on Saturday.
