Area roundup: Cedar Mountain boys hold off Lester Prairie, stay unbeaten

MORGAN — In their lowest scoring outing of the season, the Cedar Mountain Cougars did enough to hold off an upset by Lester Prairie on Friday with a 57-51 win in a Tomahawk-Valley Conference, Tomahawk Division boys basketball game.

The Cougars, now 11-0 overall and 9-0 in the Tomahawk, were led by Blake Steffl’s 19 points and four steals, while Blake Schueller had 16 points, 12 rebounds and four blocks. Zach Sandgren added 13 points and six rebounds also for the Cougars.

Cedar Mountain hosts Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop on Tuesday, while Lester Prairie (4-9, 2-6) is at Sleepy Eye on Tuesday.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Springfield 49, GHEC 45

SPRINGFIELD — Springfield held off Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Truman/Martin Luther 49-45 on Friday night in a Tomahawk-Valley Conference, Tomahawk Division girls basketball game.

Emma Hauger led Springfield with 22 points, eight steals and six rebounds, while Jasmine Novotny had 15 points and five rebounds.

GHEC was led by Londyn Bowers and Madisen Lewis with 15 points apiece.

Springfield (10-4, 7-2) hosts Wabasso on Monday night.

St. Mary’s 80, GFW 26

SLEEPY EYE — Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s ran past Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop 80-26 on Friday night in a Tomahawk-Valley Conference, Tomahawk Division girls basketball game.

Morgan Mathiowetz led the way with 31 points, eight steals, six rebounds and four assists, while Olivia Schieffert had 15 points, nine rebounds, nine assists and three steals. Natalie Fischer added 12 points, four steals and three assists.

GFW was led by Nicole Duehn’s 15 points.

St. Mary’s (14-0, 10-0) is at New Ulm Cathedral for a 5 p.m. game Tuesday, while GFW (4-11, 2-7) is at Sibley East on Monday night.

Nicollet 81, Madelia 31

NICOLLET — Nicollet rolled Madelia 81-31 on Friday night in a Tomahawk-Valley Conference, Valley Division girls basketball game.

Leah Bode led the Raiders in the win with 31 points, nine rebounds and eight steals, while Savannah Klockziem had 15 points, 10 rebounds and four steals and Zoie Rengstorf had 9 points, seven steals and five assists. Jazmyn Goettlicher added 7 points for Nicollet, while Cheyenne Klockziem had 6 points, 10 rebounds and three blocks.

Madelia was led by Grace Tatro’s 20 points, while Alicia Lugo had 7 points.

Nicollet (9-6, 7-2) hosts Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Truman/Martin Luther on Monday night. Madelia (2-13, 0-7) hosts Cleveland on Monday night.

BLHS 56, Wabasso 46

WABASSO — Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart topped Wabasso 56-46 on Friday night in a Tomahawk-Valley Conference, Tomahawk Division girls basketball game.

Wabasso was led by Aylah Jenniges’ 10 points and eight rebounds, while Sara Carlson had 9 points, six rebounds and four assists and Ava Samyn had 8 points and five rebounds. Peyton Jenniges added 7 points and five rebounds for the Rabbits also.

No statistics were reported for BLHS.

Wabasso (1-17, 0-10) is at Springfield on Monday night.

Redwood Valley 71,

MVL 56

REDWOOD FALLS — Minnesota Valley Lutheran dropped a nonconference girls basketball game to Redwood Valley on Friday night, falling 71-56.

Avery Freier led MVL with 23 points, three rebounds and two steals, while Olivia Hammer had 11 points, four rebounds and two steals and Avery Hahn had 9 points, eight rebounds and four steals.

Kendall Huhnerkoch and Cali Johnson led the Cardinals in the win with 25 and 23 points, respectively.

MVL (8-6, 1-2) is at Blue Earth on Tuesday.
