Weekend area roundup: Sleepy Eye boys bounce back with win over MCW

Sleepy Eye 69, MCW 56

SPRINGDIELD — Sleepy Eye snapped a three-game losing skid on Saturday with a 69-56 win over Martin County West in a nonconference boys basketball game at a Springfield High School invite.

Sleepy Eye (7-8) was led by Landon Wendinger’s 24 points, 17 rebounds and 10 blocks, while Robert Romberg had 24 points, six 3-pointers. Eric Lozano added 14 points for Sleepy Eye.

Springfield 86, WWG 75

SPRINGFIELD — The Springfield Tigers topped Westbrook-Walnut Grove 86-75 on Saturday in a nonconference boys basketball game at the Tigers’ home invitational.

Brayden Sturm had 17 points, eight rebounds and seven assists to lead the Tigers, while Bryan Buerkle added 16 points, 10 rebounds and six assists. Brecken Heiling also had 15 points for Springfield, while Dylan Simonson had 13 points, Madden Lendt had 10 points and Parker Kuehn had 9 points and four assists.

GFW 70, RRC 35

SPRINGFIELD — Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop downed Red Rock Central 70-35 on Saturday in a nonconference boys basketball game at a Springfield High School invite.

Cole Jacobson and Easton Taylor each had 16 points to lead GFW, while Carter Klages had 10 points and Owen Swenson added 8 points.

Cedar Mountain 88,

Windom 81

WINDOM — Cedar Mountain moved to 12-0 on the season Saturday with an 88-81 win over Windom Area in a nonconference boys basketball game.

Blake Schueller had 38 points, 14 rebounds and four steals to help keep the Cougars’ perfect record intact, while Carson Schiller had 18 points and Zach Sandgren had 14 points, eight rebounds and seven assists. Blake Steffl had 9 points, nine assists, eight rebounds and five steals also for Cedar Mountain.

ACGC 82, Madelia 70

SPRINGFIELD — Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City defeated Madelia 82-70 on Saturday in a nonconference boys basketball game at a Springfield High School invite.

Madelia led 44-37 at the half.

Kaydon Firchau led Madelia with 32 points, while Haydon Jones added 15 points.

Madelia (11-2) is at Comfrey to take on Mountain Lake Area/Comfrey on Tuesday night.

Late Friday

Lester Prairie 62, Cedar Mountain 36

LESTER PRAIRIE — Lester Prairie defeated Cedar Mountain 62-36 on Friday night in a Tomahawk-Valley Conference, Tomahawk Division girls basketball game.

Despite the loss, Aubrey Steffl set a Cedar Mountain girls all-time scoring record with a 22-point game. Steffl now sits at 1,608 points, passing Shannon Dallenbach’s previous record of 1,596 which was set in 1991. Steffl also had 12 rebounds and three steals Friday.

Kendra Lueck added 5 points and seven rebounds for Cedar Mountain, while Marlie Wildt had 4 points and eight rebounds.

Lester Prairie was led by Addison Hoof’s 38 points, while Miranda Mallak had 11 points.
