Area roundup: Finstad hits 1,00th career point in Cathedral loss at St. Mary’s

St. Mary’s 64, Cathedral 46
SLEEPY EYE — New Ulm Cathedral’s Jake Finstad scored his 1,000th career point on Tuesday, but the Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s Knights took the win in the end with a 64-46 win in a Tomahawk-Valley Conference, Tomahawk Division boys basketball game.
Finstad finished with 10 points, while teammates Eli Anderson had 14 points and Jack Edwards had 13.
St. Mary’s saw four Knights in double figures, led by Kessler Severson’s 16 points, while Adam Steffensmeier had 14 points, Tyler Mathiowetz had 11 points and Brecken Hulke had 10 points.
The Knights (7-7, 4-5) are at Springfield on Friday, while Cathedral (5-9, 5-5) hosts Mayer Lutheran on Thursday.
LCWM 68, MVL 65
LAKE CRYSTAL — Lake Crystal Wellcome Memorial held off a Minnesota Valley Lutheran comeback on Tuesday for a 68-65 win in a South Central Conference boys basketball game.
The Chargers trailed 48-29 at halftime but came back to make it interesting in the second half by outscoring LCWM 36-20 in the second half.
Blake Sexton led the Chargers with 21 points, while Brennan Bendix had 13 points and Eric Sorenson had 13. Luke Merseth added 6 points, five rebounds and two blocks also for MVL.
Brayden Matthews led LCWM with 19 points.
MVL (7-6, 1-2) is at Norwood Young America for a nonconference game on Thursday.
Springfield 92, Wabasso 60
WABASSO — Springfield ran by Wabasso 92-60 on Tuesday night in a Tomahawk-Valley Conference, Tomahawk Division boys basketball game.
Springfield was led by Brayden Sturm’s 28 points, 13 rebounds and four assists, while Bryan Buerkle had 15 points and six rebounds. Madden Lendt had 13 points, while Brecken Heiling had 12 points and six steals, Dylan Simonson had 11 points and Isaac Fredin had six steals.
Wabasso was led by Calvin Hanna’s 16 points and four assists, while Cole Frericks had 10 points and 10 rebounds. Tavyn Larson added 10 points, while Brayden Guetter had 8 points, four rebounds and three blocks.
Nicollet 55, MCW 51
TRIMONT — Nicollet held off Martin County West for a 55-51 win on Tuesday in a Tomahawk-Valley Conference, Valley Division boys basketball game.
Carson Kettner led the way for the Raiders in the win with 21 points and six rebounds, while Henry Kennedy had 12 points, eight rebounds and six assists and AJ Kramer had 10 points, Henry Oscarson added 7 points for Nicollet.
Nicollet (5-9, 4-3) hosts Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart on Thursday.
Cedar Mountain 91, GFW 57
MORGAN — Cedar Mountain rolled by Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop 91-57 on Tuesday in a Tomahawk-Valley Conference, Tomahawk Division boys basketball game.
Blake Schueller led the Cougars with 31 points and 14 rebounds, while Carson Schiller had 20 points and Zach Sandgren had 16 points and nine rebounds. Blake Steffl also had a dominant all-around effort for Cedar Mountain with 17 points, 14 assists and eight steals.
No statistics were reported for GFW.
Cedar Mountain, now 13-0 overall and 10-0 in the conference, travel to take on Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart on Friday, while GFW (6-8, 3-5) hosts Lester Prairie on Friday.
Madelia 71, MLA/C 51
COMFREY — Madelia topped Mountain Lake Area/Comfrey 71-51 on Tuesday night in a Tomahawk-Valley Conference, Valley Division boys basketball game.
Hayden Jones had 26 points to lead Madelia, while Tate Becker added 12, Kaydon Firchau had 11 and Kyle Pietsch had 10.
Madelia (12-2) travels to Northrop to take on Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Truman/Martin Luther on Friday.
LSH 65, Sibley East 50
ARLINGTON — LeSueur-Henderson defeated Sibley East 65-50 on Tuesday in a South Central Conference boys basketball game.
Quintin DeVlaeminck led Sibley East with 18 points, seven rebounds, four steals and three assists, while Riley Bussler had 15 points, five rebounds and three assists. Evan Pautsch dished out a team-high five assists also for Sibley East.
Sibley East (6-8) is at Lake Crystal Wellcome Memorial on Friday.

BLUE EARTH — Minnesota Valley Lutheran defeated Blue Earth Area 54-46 on Tuesday night in a nonconference girls basketball game.
Avery Freier led the Chargers wirh 27 points, eight rebounds and four steals, while Olivia Hammer had 11 points, four rebounds and three steals. Ellie Kaesermann added 6 points and nine rebounds also for the Chargers.
MVL (9-6) hosts Medford on Thursday.
Cedar Mountain 63, GFW 47
WINTHROP — Cedar Mountain topped Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop on Tuesday in a Tomahawk-Valley Conference, Tomahawk Division girls basketball game.
Aubrey Steffl led the way for Cedar Mountain with 23 points, 12 rebounds, seven steals and six assists, while Brooklyn Diehn had 15 points. Kendra Erickson added 9 points, eight rebounds, four steals and two assists.
Madyson Steele had 9 points to lead GFW, while Nicole Duehn and Trinity Stearns each had 8 points.
Cedar Mountain (13-5, 6-4) hosts Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart on Friday, while GFW (4-12, 2-8) is at Lester Prairie on Friday.

TRIMONT — Martin County West defeated Nicollet 61-48 on Tuesday in a Tomahawk-Valley Conference, Valley Division girls basketball game.
Cheyenne Klockziem led Nicollet with 11 points and nine rebounds, while Savannah Klockziem had 10 points and three steals, Zoie Rengstorf had 9 points, three assists and three steals, Leah Bode had 8 points and Jazmyn Goettlicher had 7 points and 11 rebounds.
Nicollet (9-7, 7-3) hosts Springfield on Tuesday.
