Area roundup: Brennan makes 3,000th career save for Eagles in loss to Luverne

NEW ULM — Luverne defeated New Ulm 4-2 in a Big South Conference girls hockey game on Thursday.
Despite the loss, Eagles goalie Ava Brennan had a big night in the net with 50 saves, passing 3,000 saves for her career.
Jersey Haugen and Abby Forstner scored the New Ulm goals, with Madalyn Olson and Mya Hornick getting assists.
New Ulm (9-12-2, 2-6-1) hosts Minnesota River on Monday.

St. Mary’s 67,
Springfield 28
SLEEPY EYE — Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s defeated Springfield 67-28 in a Tomahawk-Valley Conference, Tomahawk Division girls basketball game on Thursday.
Morgan Mathiowetz led the Knights with 31 points, nine assists, seven rebounds and eight steals, while Olivia Schieffert had 10 points, six steals, four assists and three rebounds. Natalie Fischer added 9 points and three steals, while Amelia Schwartz had 8 points and six rebounds.
Emma Hauger led Springfield with 14 points, while Ayla Rothmeier had 5 points.
St. Mary’s (16-0, 12-0) travels to play Russell-Tyler-Ruthton on Monday. Springfield (11-5, 8-3) hosts Cedar Mountain on Monday.
JWP 59, Cathedral 39
JANESVILLE — Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton defeated New Ulm Cathedral 59-39 in a nonconference girls basketball game on Thursday.
Maddie Gilles and Jayde Altermatt each had 10 points for Cathedral, while Olivia Macho had 8 points.
Cathedral (2-14) travels to Mankato Loyola on Saturday.

Springfield 85, Loyola 55
SPRINGFIELD — Springfield cruised by Mankato Loyola 85-55 in a Tomahawk-Valley Conference boys basketball crossover game.
Brecken Heiling led the Tigers with 21 points and two steals, while Isac Fredin had 13 points, three rebounds, three assists and two steals. Brayden Sturm had 13 points, eight rebounds, four assists and four steals, while Parker Kuehn had 11 points and four assists. Madden Lednt added 10 points and 10 rebounds for the Tigers.
Springfield (14-1) hosts Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s on Friday.
Nicollet 63, BLHS 31
NICOLLET — Nicollet defeated Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart 63-31 Thursday in a Tomahawk-Valley Conference boys basketball crossover game.
Carson Kettner led the Raiders with 20 points and seven rebounds, while Noah Fitzner had 12 points. Henry Oscarson had 10 points, eight rebounds and five assists, while AJ Kramer had 10 points and eight rebounds. Henry Kennedy added 8 points, 10 rebounds and five assists.
Nicollet (6-9) hosts Mankato Loyola on Friday.

NORWOOD YOUNG AMERICA — Norwood Young America defeated Minnesota Valley Lutheran 81-54 in a nonconference boys basketball game on Thursday.
Brennan Bendix led the Chargers with 12 points and four rebounds, while Pierson Brau had 11 points and three rebounds. Owen Birkholz added 10 points for MVL.
MVL (7-7) hosts St. Clair on Friday.
