No. 10 NUA dominates home tri
NEW ULM — With just one loss on the season, the New Ulm Area wrestling team clearly hasn’t needed home mat advantage to win.
That didn’t stop the No. 10-ranked Class AA Eagles from issuing its home crowd a warm welcome for the first time all season at New Ulm High School. The Eagles continued their dominance Thursday night in a triangular with a pair of wins, defeating Blue Earth Area 64-9 and Tri-City United 65-4.
Regan Johnson (107), Brayden Miller (114), Alex Portner (121), Kane Johnson (127), Elijah Rieser (139), Braxton Kiecker (145), Candon Briggs (152), Wyatt Pollard (172), Tilken Fruhwirth and Jamisen Frederickson (215) all went 2-0 on the night for the now 15-1 Eagles.
While the Eagles had few hiccups to deal with Thursday night, NUA head coach Kevin Briggs said it’s not a matter of who his team is up against that he cares about.
“We don’t focus on who we wrestle, we focus on how we wrestle,” he said. “Particularly, this last dual [against TCU], I thought from top to bottom, every kid was aggressive, had some good stuff, even Tegan [Kral], who lost, he wrestled a hell of a kid and he wrestled a great match.”
Rieser, a junior who passed 100 career varsity wins this past December, was aggressive in both of his matches Thursday and earned two tech falls as a result.
“I think it’s important to go out there, not just to win, but to score a lot of points on the mat,” Rieser said. “First match tonight was a little bit sloppy, but we could still get it done. That second match I was really ready to go that time and just going out there to score a lot of points.”
NUA started the night with a dominant win over BEA.
Regan Johnson, the No. 6-ranked 107-pounder, finished his first match of the evening as fans were still getting seated, getting a quick takedown and pin in 34 seconds over Jason Casey.
Miller carried his teammate’s momentum into his own match with Drake Engelby at 121 as Miller earned his fourth takedown of the match in the second period and quickly finished things with a pin.
Portner and Kane Johnson, ranked eighth at 127, accepted forfeits to put NUA up 24-0 before Tegan Kral took the mat for the Eagles in a 133-pound matchup with Timmy Nagel. Kral took an 8-1 lead into the second period and, after managing a bloody nose, Kral finished the match with a takedown and an 18-2 tech fall in 3:37.
Rieser controlled his match against Colin Alfson from start to finish, a finish that saw Rieser pick up a 4-point near fall at the second-period buzzer for a 22-5 tech fall.
Kiecker pinned Layden Bassett at 145 in 1:18 before Candon Briggs earned a pin even quicker at 152 in 47 seconds over Colton Tolzmann to put NUA ahead 46-0.
The Bucs earned their first win of the night when Will Weerts earned a 12-5 decision over Dirk Haynes.
Pollard, ranked fifth at 172, and Fruhwirth accepted another pair of forfeits for the Eagles for a 58-3 team lead before the action and dominance continued for the Eagles when Frederickson took Jacob Gampbell down promptly and pinned him in 39 seconds at 215 pounds for a 64-3 NUA lead.
BEA earned the final win of the dual at heavyweight when Chase Gambell pinned Henry Waloch in 3:28.
After BEA finished taking on TCU and the Rolling Thunder Wrestling youth wrestlers got their turn on the mats, the Eagles finished the night against TCU.
Regan Johnson started the TCU dual with a pin over Owen Delander in 1:59 before Miller accepted a forfeit for a 12-0 NUA lead. Portner then earned a 17-0 tech fall in the third period over Griffin LeMieux for a 17-0 NUA lead before Kane Johnson got in on the action with a 12-2 major decision win over Gage Factor.
Tucker Skluzacek earned a 12-3 major decision over Kral to give TCU its lone points of the dual and have it down 21-4.
Rieser the dominated again with a 17-2 tech fall win over Keegan O’Meara right before the end of the second period.
“I’m always going out there looking to score a lot of points no matter who the opponent is,” Rieser said. “Once I get a feel for them, tie up a couple times, then I can really decide if it’s in the plan or if I’ve just got to work my match.”
Kiecker then took down Blake Herman in the first period of their 145-pound match and got the pin in 1:37 for a 32-4 NUA lead.
Candon Briggs then had a dramatic finish to his final match of the night in a battle with Nate Blaschko, who trailed 7-0 at one point in the first period. Blaschko worked his way back to a tie in the third period, however, at 8-8.
“I didn’t stay on him,” Candon Briggs said. “I got a little complacent I guess. I should have stayed on my attacks more. I let him do more shooting than I did and that let him come back.”
But in the final 30 seconds, Candon Briggs was able to earn an escape point to take the lead, forcing Blaschko to look for a match-winning takedown. It was Candon Briggs getting that takedown in the final seconds, however, to seal a 12-8 decision.
“He shot right away, I knew he was going to, he almost took me down and I was lucky enough to get away from him,” Candon Briggs said. “I was kind of just holding on and it’s not maybe the greatest thing I could have done, but it turned out and it’s great to come away with the victory.
“I was trying to keep the action going kind of so I didn’t get a stalemate and have to restart and give him another opportunity. Obviously trying to keep my legs back so he can’t reach for the legs and stuff, but once I got that takedown, that was a relief.”
Not to be outdone in the late-match heroics, Haynes ended his night with a comeback win over Maxxis Ross. Haynes trailed by 4 in the second period before getting a reversal and turning it into a pin in 3:03 to put NUA up 41-4.
Pollard then got his first one-one-on match of the night as he picked up six takedowns against Toren Kelly and won by pin in 3:38.
Fruhwirth then turned a second-period takedown into a pin over Ethan Woldsnes in 2:13 to finish the action as Frederickson and Emerson Johnson accepted forfeits to close the night with another dominant NUA win.
NUA is in Lamberton for a tournament Friday before hosting a quadrangular on Tuesday.
