Crusaders down Greyhounds in girls basketball

MANKATO – Mankato Loyola came away with a 62-27 win over New Ulm Cathedral Saturday in a Tomahawk-Valley Conference crossover girls basketball game.

Shay Wilfahrt led the Greyhounds with 15 points, while Olivia Macho had 5 points.

Maddie Gilles also scored 4 points for Cathedral and currently sits 19 points away from 1,000 career points.

Cathedral took an initial 4-0 lead with layups from Wilfahrt and Jayde Altermatt, but Loyola’s trap defense began to frustrate the Greyhounds as the Crusaders pulled out to a 10-6 lead. Wilfahrt hit another layup to make it a 10-8 game before Loyola took control, scoring 29 of the next 35 points to go up 39-14 at half. The Crusaders scoring run was only interrupted by a pair of free throws each from Macho and Gilles and a midrange jumper from Wilfahrt after she dropped her defender.

Cathedral saw some offensive success to start the second half, with Gilles hitting a layup to open the half and Wilfahrt making a 3-pointer to cut the lead down to 41-20. Macho hit another 3-pointer and Wilfahrt made another shot to make it a 43-26 game. However, Loyola went on a 19-0 to close out the game.

Cathedral (2-15) hosts Lester Prairie on Tuesday.
