Area roundup: Josie Sellner leads New Ulm gymnasts by Marshall

PREP GYMNASTICS

New Ulm 132.95, Marshall 118.3

MARSHALL — The New Ulm gymnastics team rolled to a 132.95-118.3 win over Marshall on Monday night in a Big South Conference meet.

It was also the Eagles’ final regular season meet of the year as they finished with a 6-3 record. They will now prepare for the section tournament on Feb. 13.

New Ulm’s Josie Sellner led all gymnasts with a 34.775 all-around score, finishing ahead of Marshall’s Autumn Deutz, who took second with a 30.775.

In the vault, New Ulm had the top four scores as Avarey Sellner finished first with an 8.65, Josie Sellner took second (8.45), Isabelle Longtin took third (8.425) and Karli Schwab took fourth (8.15).

For New Ulm on bars, Josie Sellner took first (8.6), Alaina Blomberg took third (7.775) and Ainsley Tess took fifth (7.1).

On beam for New Ulm, Sophia Berger took first (8.825), while Josie Sellner took second (8.7), Avarey Sellner took third (8.3) and Matilda Klawitter took fourth (8.3).

Josie Sellner also took first in the floor routine (9.025), while Berger took second (8.825), Avarey Sellner finished third (8.625) and Blomberg took fourth (8.225).

GIRLS HOCKEY

Minnesota River 3, New Ulm 2 (OT)

NEW ULM — Minnesota River defeated New Ulm 3-2 in an overtime Big South Conference girls hockey game Monday at the New Ulm Civic Center.

Madalyn Olson had a goal and an assist in the game, while Tristyn Wolner had the other New Ulm goal. Jersey Haugen and Abby Forstner each picked up an assist, and goaltender Ava Brennan had 35 saves.

New Ulm (9-13-2, 2-7-1) travels to Windom on Thursday.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Sleepy Eye 79, BLHS 39

HECTOR — Sleepy Eye downed Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart 79-39 on Monday in a Tomahawk-Valley Conference, Tomahawk Division boys basketball game.

Sleepy Eye was led by Landon Wendinger, who had 27 points and 16 rebounds, while Brayden Heiderscheidt had 12 points and seven assists. Chase Zufall added 12 points for Sleepy Eye also.

No statistics were provided for BLHS.

Sleepy Eye (8-9, 5-6) hosts Cedar Mountain on Friday, while BLHS (0-17, 0-11) is at Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop on Friday.

Madelia 86, Nicollet 66

MADELIA — Madelia ran by Nicollet 86-66 on Monday night in a Tomahawk-Valley Conference, Valley Division boys basketball game.

Madelia was led by Hayden Jones, who had 26 points and hit six 3-pointers. Kaydon Firchau had 25 points, four 3s, for Madelia, while Kyle Pietsch had 13 points and 12 rebounds and Josiah DeMaris had 11 points.

Nicollet was led by Carson Kettner’s 23 points and nine rebounds, while Henry Kennedy had 16 points and six rebounds. Henry Oscarson had 11 points.

Madelia travels to Sherburne to play Martin County West on Thursday. Nicollet is at Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Truman/Martin Luther on Thursday.

Lester Prairie 62, Sibley East 58

ARLINGTON — Lester Prairie defeated Sibley East 62-58 in a nonconference boys basketball game on Monday.

Quintin DeVlaeminc led the Wolverines with 24 points, five rebounds and three steals, while Ezra Weber had 12 points and three rebounds. Evan Pautsch added 9 points, three assists and three steals.

Sibley East (6-10) hosts Maple River on Thursday.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Cedar Mountain 58, Springfield 51

SPRINGFIELD — Cedar Mountain topped Springfield 58-51 in a Tomahawk-Valley Conference, Tomahawk Division girls basketball game on Monday.

Aubrey Steffl led the Cougars with 28 points, seven rebounds, five assists and four steals, while Brooklyn Diehn had 10 points, four steals and three rebounds. Marlie Wildt added 9 points and 10 rebounds.

Springfield was led by Emma Hauger with 28 points, while Kendall Krueger had 5 points and six rebounds.

Cedar Mountain (14-6, 7-5) hosts BOLD on Thursday. Springfield (11-6, 8-4) hosts Lester Prairie on Friday.

Loyola 57, GFW 54

WINTHROP — Loyola downed Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop 57-54 in a Tomahawk-Valley Conference crossover girls basketball game on Monday.

Taylor Bauer led the Thunderbirds with 13 points, while Kelby Bruns had 11 points. Trinity Stearns added 10 points for GFW.

GFW (4-14) travels to Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart on Friday.

MCC 61, Wabasso 34

WABASSO — Murray County Central rolled Wabasso 61-34 in a nonconference girls basketball game on Monday.

Elizabeth Morin led the Rabbits with 11 points and eight rebounds. Sara Carlson added 4 points and seven rebounds.

Wabasso (1-20) travels to Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s on Tuesday.
