NUA had a few significant wins on the night, with Brayden Miller earning his 25th career pin and Alex Portner taking his 75th career win.

The Eagles started the night with the SJA/M match, where Regan Johnson opened with a pin against Joel Sanchez-Delgado in 1:23 at 107 pounds. Miller followed that up with a pin in 3:00 over Gabriel Gunderson for his 25th career win by fall at 114.

Portner took the mat for a 121-pound matchup against Beck Johnson. Portner started the match with a takedown, followed by an escape by Beck Johnson. Beck Johnson flipped the script with a takedown of his own, followed by a Portner escape to tie the score at 4.

Portner started up in the second period, but Beck Johnson got an escape and a takedown to take an 8-4 lead. Portner started down again in the third and managed a reversal, but Beck Johnson escaped with just 40 seconds to go to make it 9-6. With time running out, Portner pulled off the comeback, a takedown with seconds left on the clock and got a three-second near fall to earn a 12-9 decision.

“I knew I had to get out because time was ticking,” Portner said. “I just got out and had to get some urgency going, then I had to find a way to get a takedown.”

NUA executed two cradle pins in a row with Kane Johnson at 127 in 1:51 and Tegan Kral in 1:36, then Elijah Rieser earned a 19-2 technical fall after taking down Noel Davila five times along with a 4-point near fall to put NUA up 32-0. SJA/M earned its first points of the match by accepting a forfeit at 145, then with Talyn Tande’s 14-6 major decision over Candon Briggs at 152.

Haynes got NUA back on the board with a 19-5 major decision over Devin Ramirez at 160. NUA’s Cole Voges got a pin in 2:55 over Fabian Herrera at 172, then NUA’s Wyatt Pollard took down Peyton Wolner twice with a 4-point near fall with each takedown and a reversal for a 16-1 technical fall at 187. NUA wrapped up the match with two accepted forfeits, one by Tilken Fruhwirth at 215 and one by senior Henry Waloch at 285, for a 59-10 win.

The Eagles matched up against Sibley East for the next dual, starting with accepted forfeits from Regan Johnson, Miller and Portner, who earned his 75th career win to put NUA up 18-0. Kane Johnson set up to take on Sibley East’s Julio Alejandro at 127, and the two past state tournament wrestlers were locked in a stalemate for the entire first period and most of the second.

“I knew who he was and I knew it was going to be a close one,” Kane Johnson said. “In youth we used to wrestle all the time, so we’re sort of buddies. We know each other’s styles.”

Kane Johnson was the first to score with an escape in the second, and the two found themselves evenly matched for the rest of the period. Alejandro earned an escape in the third to tie it, then went for an aggressive leg swipe. Kane Johnson turned that into a takedown for himself, sealing the 4-3 decision.

“I had a lot of energy at the end there,” Kane Johnson said. “Just tried to stay in good position and tried to get a takedown at the end.”

Kral matched up with Sibley East’s Tanner Johnson at 133, and Kral won a 18-3 technical fall to put NUA up 26-0. Rieser accepted a forfeit to put NUA up 32-0, but Benito Diaz put Sibley East on the board with a 10-1 major decision over Braxton Kieker at 145. Briggs accepted a forfeit at 152, then Atley Strack got a pin for Sibley East over NUA’s Spencer Drill at 160.

Sibley East forfeited at 172 and 189 to put NUA up 50-10, then NUA’s Jamisen Frederickson got a pin in 1:06 over Gianny Lopez at 215. Emmerson Johnson wrapped up the match for New Ulm with a quick takedown of Axel Cardenas, pinning him in 21 seconds for the 62-10 win.

Marshall, the fifth-ranked team in Class AA, defeated NUA 39-18 in the final matchup of the night. Regan Johnson opened the meet up with a 13-3 major decision over Andrew Yang at 107, but the Eagles didn’t get another win until Kral pinned Gavin Williams in 4:02 at 133. Rieser followed that up with a 8-3 decision over Dawson DeCamp at 139, and Marshall won the next three matches before Pollard won a 20-5 technical fall over Joshua Kraft at 172 for NUA’s final points of the match.

NUA travels to Annandale High School on Saturday.
