Morgan Mathiowetz scores 2,000th point
St. Mary's sophomore joins big sister, Madison, in historic scoring club
SLEEPY EYE — Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s sophomore Morgan Mathiowetz’s completed and-one in the first half of Tuesday’s Tomahawk-Valley Conference, Tomahawk Division girls basketball game against Wabasso saw her join the 2,000-point club for her career.
It was just one of many high points for the Knights as they rolled to an 83-22 win over the Rabbits at St. Mary’s High School.
She becomes the third St. Mary’s basketball player to join the 2,000-point club, now trailing just Carson Domeier (2,073 points) and her older sister, Madison Mathiowetz (3,762 points).
The milestone performance was just another common night of basketball for the sophomore standout as she kept the Knights undefeated on the season with the win, moving them to 18-0 overall and 13-0 in the Tomahawk.
She finished the night with 33 points and eight assists.
Morgan Mathiowetz, who was averaging a girls state-best 34.3 points per game entering Tuesday’s game, said that the 2,000-point milestone
“The people before me set the bar pretty high,” she said. “Just learning from them, they’ve always been great role models and great for the town of Sleepy Eye. Just learning from them and watching them play the game how the game’s supposed to be played. I think that’s been the biggest thing, just learning from other people and always willing to get better every day.”
Morgan Mathiowetz has been a defensive menace this season also for the Knights, and many of her points came off takeaways as the Rabbits (1-21, 0-13) struggled from the jump. Mathiowetz finished the game with 10 steals.
Madison Mathiowetz scored her 2,000th career point as a junior on Jan. 21, 2021. Now on January 28, 2025, it was Morgan Mathiowetz’s turn to one-up her big sister.
Madison Mathiowetz was in attendance Tuesday, but Morgan Mathiowetz wasn’t able to say much to her sister after her milestone achievement.
“When I went over by my parents [after the 2,000th career point], I missed her, but I got her at halftime, so I just gave her a hug and said thanks for coming and I’d talk to her after the game,” Morgan Mathiowetz said. “But she’s busy with what she’s got going at South Dakota State, so they’ve had a really good season and I’m just super proud of how far she’s come in college.”
Wabasso was led by Aylah Jenniges’s 5 points, while Leah Mathiowetz and Ava Samyn had 4 points.
The Knights also got 18 points, five assists and five steals from Olivia Schieffert, while Brynne Ibberson had 13 points and Amelia Schwartz had 9 points.
The Knights jumped out to a quick 12-0 lead before Wabasso got on the board on free throws from Jenniges. The Knights continued to show why they’re ranked fourth in the state as they scored the next 38 points. Wabasso got its lone bucket of the half on a 3 by Audrey Johnson to end the Knights’ run.
While Morgan Mathiowetz was a scoring highlight herself for the Knights with 18 points during that 38-0 run, she also made several nice passes for scores, including a steal and behind-the-back pass to Ibberson for a layup in transition.
Up 52-5, Morgan Mathiowetz scored on a layup and drew a foul with 4:27 left in the first half. Her extra free throw put her at 2,000 points total for her career and she was allowed a moment to celebrate her achievement with her teammates at halfcourt before greeting her family in the bleachers.
The Knights got a corner 3 by Schieffert with less than 10 seconds to go in the half to give them a 65-5 halftime lead.
Knights head coach Bruce Woitas sent out a fresh five to the floor with 13:50 left to play as the Knights continued to roll to victory.
The Knights are at Mayer Lutheran on Friday night, while Wabasso hosts New Ulm Cathedral on Saturday afternoon.
