Eagles blank Trojans in 3A quarterfinals

NEW ULM — With 14 underclassmen on this year’s varsity team, the New Ulm Eagles have plenty of youth to build a strong team for years to come.

While that youth showed up and made plays in Thursday’s Section 3A Girls Hockey Tournament Quarterfinals game against Worthington, so did the Eagles’ veterans.

Getting a little something from everyone, the Eagles shut out the Trojans 4-0 at the New Ulm Civic Center.

The win moves the No. 4 Eagles (11-13-2) on to a road game at No. 1-seeded Marshall on Saturday.

Eighth-grader Brecklyn Harazin, freshman Abby Forstner and juniors Tristyn Wolner and Lilly Kral each scored for New Ulm in that order.

Eagles senior Ava Brennan made 11 saves before junior goalie Ava Schmid took the net with eight minutes left and finished with six saves.

Maci Mahlberg made 31 saves in net for the fifth-seeded Trojans, who end their season with a 5-17-1 record.

The Eagles defeated the Trojans in Worthington two weeks ago three weeks ago 5-0 on Jan. 16. Senior Mya Hornick, who had an assist, said despite that win, she knew not to take the Trojans lightly in the playoffs.

“We might have beat them 5-0, but we also didn’t really play a good game when we went down there,” Hornick said. “We had to come in with a new mindset and play like, ‘This is a playoff game, we’re going to expect it to be Marshall or Luverne,’ and come in with that mindset that it is go time and we need to have a better game than we did down there.”

Harazin got the Eagles on the board first with her first career playoff goal at 10:51 of the first period, assisted by Brogan Hulke and Kaelynn Welsh. After Welsch dumped the puck into the corner, it was picked up by Hulke. Hulke then trickled a soft pass to Harazin, who put in the net from between the faceoff circle and the blue line.

“She was in the right spot, she made the right read and she took a good shot,” Eagles head coach Jeremy Reed said. “It was a great play on Brecklyn’s part. Really good play. She’s worked her tail off for us all season and you can just really see the growth in her. Super happy for her and she definitely earned that.”

Forstner was next to score at 8:18 of the second period off a deflected shot by Wolner. Wolner got herself a goal unassisted at 15:46 of the period to give New Ulm a 3-0 lead.

At 1:31 of the third, Brielynn Weston’s pass to Hornick in the corner was then dished to Kral, who scored from in front of the net for her first career playoff goal.

“It feels really good and I want to inspire other girls to do the same,” Kral said of her goal. “We have a lot of younger girls on our team and I want them to push themselves as I did today to do their best every game.”

The Eagles killed all three Worthington power plays and went 0 for 1 on their lone power play.

The Eagles now prepare for the Marshall Tigers, a team that beat them 8-1 in Marshall back in December and 4-0 in New Ulm on Jan. 21.

“We’re going to really push ourselves,” Kral said. “They’re a great team. I know some of them personally by playing on some summer teams with them and we have to bring our all and just not hesitate and do our pressure that we did today.”

The Tigers will be a tough team to keep off the scoreboard, but Reed said he wants his players to show up and be ready for the game the same way they have all season in practice.

“They’ve got a top line that scores a lot of goals,” Reed said. “That’s going to be our biggest thing is taking some things we learned the first couple times we played them this year and applying them in a game situation.

“One thing I’m really proud of the kids, all of our players, they’ve been doing a great job of coming to the rink and focusing, and we’re putting a really good piece of work together when it comes to practice and showing up. … They’ve grown a lot as people and young hockey players this year. They’ve grown a lot. Like we’ve talked about, they have nothing to lose, there’s nothing to lose, they’re the four seed.”
