Area roundup: New Ulm boys hold off Willmar

New Ulm 66, Willmar 63
WILLMAR — New Ulm held on for a 66-63 win over Willmar on Monday night in a nonconference boys basketball game.
The Eagles led 28-24 at halftime.
Mitchell Hopp led the Eagles with 20 points, while Levi Hopp and Zach Hubbard each had 12 points. Owen Castleman chipped in 7 for New Ulm.
New Ulm (7-14) is at Tri-City United for a 3 p.m. game Saturday.
Sleepy Eye 72, MLA/C 63
MOUNTAIN LAKE — Sleepy Eye defeated Mountain Lake Area/Comfrey 72-63 on Monday night in a nonconference boys basketball game.
Landon Wendinger grabbed his 1,000th career rebound for the Indians in the win, finishing Monday’s game with 32 points and 18 rebounds. Brayden Heiderscheidt added 23 points, nine assists and five rebounds for Sleepy Eye.
Sleepy Eye (10-12) is at Springfield Tuesday night.
JWP 66, Sibley East 42
JANESVILLE — Sibley East fell to Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton 66-42 on Monday night in a nonconference boys basketball game.
Quintin DeVlaeminck led SIbley East with 25 points and six rebounds, while Evan Pautsch added 6 points and Jack Feterl had seven rebounds.
Sibley East (6-14) is at LeSueur-Henderson for a South Central Conference game on Thursday.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Cathedral 43, RRC 29
LAMBERTON — New Ulm Cathedral girls defeated Red Rock Central 43-29 on Monday night in a nonconference girls basketball game.
Shay Wilfahrt led the Greyhounds with 18 points, while Jayde Altermatt had 10 points.
Cathedral (5-18) hosts Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop at 6 p.m. Tuesday.
St. Mary’s 63, BLHS 36
HECTOR — Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s downed Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart 63-36 on Monday night in a Tomahawk-Valley Conference, Tomhawk Division girls basketball game.
Morgan Mathiowetz led the Knights in the win with 35 points, six rebounds, three assists and seven steals, while Olivia Schieffert had 8 points, six rebounds, four assists and five steals. Brynne Ibberson added 6 points, five rebounds, three assists and four steals, while Sidney Tauer had 6 points, three rebounds and seven steals.
Lily Hubin led BLHS with 15 points, while Elizabeth Quitt had 9 points.
St. Mary’s (22-2, 15-1) hosts Martin County West on Thursday night in a preview of the Tomahawk-Valley Conference title game, which takes place on Feb. 18 at St. Mary’s.
Nicollet 73, GFW 51
NICOLLET — Nicollet downed Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop 73-51 on Monday night in a Tomahawk-Valley Conference crossover girls basketball game.
Leah Bode led the Raiders with 16 points and four steals, while Cheyenne Klockziem had 15 points and Jazmyn Goettlicher had 14 points, four rebounds and two blocks. Zoie Rengstorf added 10 points, four assists and four steals, while Savannah Klockziem had 10 points and four steals.
Taylor Bauer led GFW with 12 points, while Trinity Stearns had 11 points and Kora Schwarzrock and Kelly Willegal each added 10.
Nicollet (11-10) hosts Mountain Lake Area on Tuesday.

Sleepy Eye was led by Paige Haala’s 20 points, eight assists, six rebounds and three steals, while Cadence Okerman had 17 points, six rebounds, four assists and four steals. Taylor Berkner added 12 points, while Sam Price had 10 points and four rebounds and Kayla Hecht added 9 points, eight rebounds, three assists and three steals.
Sleepy Eye (17-7) hosts Springfield on Thursday night.
