NEW ULM — Sometimes a hot goalie can lift you to a win.

Saturday night, New Ulm goaltender Graham Glaser stopped 42 of 43 Southwest Christian shots as the New Ulm Eagles boys hockey team ended their regular season schedule with a 3-1 win over the Stars in a nonconference game at the New Ulm Civic Center.

Carson Uecker, Kayden Klein and Trevan Thordson scored goals for the Eagles, who end their regular season at 11-12-2.

Mason Buegler, Talan Helget and Melvin Sellner each had an assist.

“Graham played a very solid game,” New Ulm head coach Ryan Neuman said. “He stepped up tonight and played a good three periods of hockey. He wants the one back.”

The Stars’ only goal came when Glaser partially stopped a Christian Greer shot, but it bounced off of Glaser for a goal.

“Other than that he did a good job of making some good saves,” Neuman said.

Glaser also stopped a breakaway and late in the third period, Southwest Christian twice pulled its goalie for an extra attacker but failed to score to his resume.

“And our guys were keeping guys away from him and letting him see the puck,” Neuman said. “Overall, a good team effort.”

Uecker got the Eagles on the board at the 3:29 of the first period mark when he took a pass from Mason Buegler and lifted a backhander by Eric Carlson for a 1-0 lead after the first period.

Greer’s fluke goal tied the game at 1-1 at 3:26 of the third period before the Eagles got what turned out to be the eventual game-winning goal when Kayden Klein’s shot from the high slot made it 2-1, with Helget and Sellner getting the helpers at the 5:43 mark of the third period.

Down 2-1 with 2:34 left in the game, the Stars pulled Carlson for an extra attacker.

But Thordson put a bow on the game with an open net goal at the 15:09 mark.

The Stars again pulled Carlson for an extra attacker with 1:27 left in the game, but Glaser and the Eagles did not allow a goal.

“We kept their shots from the outside so we did a good job of that,” Neuman said about the Stars extra attackers. “And Graham could see the shots. Most of the time when a goalie can see the puck he can make the save.”

The Eagles await playoff seedings for the Section 3A tournament, which officially begins with the No. 8 and 9 teams playing Tuesday in a play-in game.

Starting at $4.38/week.
