Area roundup: Wendinger sets new rebounding record in win at Loyola

Sleepy Eye 63, Loyola 59

MANKATO — Landon Wendinger broke his previous single-game rebounds record Friday night for Sleepy Eye with 29 rebounds in a 63-59 win over Mankato Loyola in a Tomahawk-Valley crossover boys basketball game.

Wendinger previously set the Sleepy Eye single-game school record with 27 rebounds on Dec. 2, 2024, in a home win over Murray County Central.

Wendinger’s 29 rebounds included 17 defensive rebounds and 12 offensive. He also had 19 points and eight blocks, while Brayden Heiderscheidt had 14 points, six rebounds and four assists. Robert Romberg also had 14 points for Sleepy Eye, while Eric Lozano had 10 points.

Sleepy Eye (12-13) hosts Cleveland in a 5:30 p.m. game Monday in its regular season finale.

Madelia 75, GFW 67

MADELIA — Madelia held off Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop 75-67 on Friday night in a Tomahawk-Valley crossover boys basketball game.

Madelia, now 19-5, was led by Kaydon Firchau’s 28 points, six assists and two blocks, while Hayden Jones had 22 points and Kyle Pietsch had 16 points and 12 rebounds.

GFW (8-17) was led by Cole Jacobson’s 29 points, while Easton Taylor had 22 points and Carter Klages added 8 points.

Madelia hosts Medford on Monday night. GFW is at Lester Prairie in a 5:30 p.m. game Saturday.

Cedar Mountain 98, Canby 51

MORGAN — Cedar Mountain crused by Canby 98-51 in a nonconference boys basketball game.

Blake Schueller led the Cougars with 26 points, 15 rebounds and five blocks with three steals, while Blake Steffl had 21 points, 13 assists and six steals. Carson Schiller had 18 points with five assists and four steals, while Zach Sandgren had 11 points and three assists.

Cedar Mountain (21-3) awaits playoff seeding for its next game.

Lester Prairie 79,

Wabasso 68

LESTER PRAIRIE — Lester Prairie defeated Wabasso 79-68 in a Tomahawk Division boys basketball game on Friday.

Drew Kemp paced the Rabbits with 13 points and eight rebounds, while Tavyn Larson had 12 points and three rebounds. Brayden Guetter had 11 points and 14 rebounds with four assists aand three blocks, and Caden Frericks had 11 points and 13 rebounds.

Wabasso (14-10, 8-7) awaits seeding for playoffs.
