NUA sends four to state

DAWSON — Four New Ulm Area wrestlers advanced to the state tournament after the Section 3AA individual wrestling tournament on Saturday.

Alex Portner, Kane Johnson, Wyatt Pollard and Jamison Frederickson all placed in the top two to qualify for state. Portner placed second at 121, Kane Johnson placed second at 127, Pollard took first at 172 and Frederickson placed second at 215.

During the tournament, Pollard also broke the school record for wins in a season, collecting his 47th win.

Also placing for New Ulm, Regan Johnson took third at 107, Brayden Miller placed fourth at 114, Tegan Kral placed fourth at 133, Elijah Rieser placed third at 139, Braxton Keicker placed fifth at 145, Dirk Haynes placed third at 160, Lane Ruch placed third at 189 and Emmerson Johnson placed sixth at 285.

Also from the area in the Section 3A tournament, Wabasso’s Kayson Harms placed first at 139 and St. James/Madelia’s Talyn Tande took first at 145. In the Section 4A tournament, Sibley East’s Julio Alejandro placed first at 127, Sibley East’s Benito Diaz placed first at 145, Sibley East’s Atley Strack placed second at 160.

Lake Crystal Wellcome Memorial/Nicollet wrestled in the Section 2A tournament with seven wrestlers advancing to state. Brody Herbst took first at 107, Riley Antony placed first at 114, Connor Othoudt placed first at 121, Carson Othoudt placed first at 133, Talan Osborne placed first at 145, Ryan Palmer placed first at 152 and Nick Slater placed first at 189.

The state individual wrestling tournament starts at 9 a.m. Saturday at the Xcel Energy Center.
