Mayer Lutheran 61
MAYER — The 12th-seeded Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s Knights rolled into their second round Section 2A playoff game against fifth-seeded Mayer Lutheran on Tuesday and upset the Crusaders 81-61.
George Schwint scored 29 points and grabbed six rebounds to lead the Knights, while Adam Steffensmeier had 20 points, four rebound and three assists. Kessler Severson had a double-double also for St. Mary’s with 19 points and 16 rebounds while also finishing with three assists and two blocks.
The Knights now take on No. 4-seeded Madelia at 7:45 p.m. Thursday at St. Peter High School.
Springfield 74, GFW 55
SPRINGFIELD — The No. 1-seeded Springfield Tigers earned a 74-55 win over No. 17 Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop on Tuesday evening in the second round of the Section 2A playoffs.
Brayden Sturm led the Tigers with 18 points, eight rebounds and five assists, while Madden Lendt had 13 points and four rebounds, Brecken Heiling had 12 points, five assists, four rebounds and five steals and Parker Kuehn had 11 points, seven rebounds and four assists. Isaac Fredin and Dylan Simonson each scored 8 points for Springfield.
No statistics were reported for GFW, which ends its season 10-18.
Springfield plays eighth-seeded Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City at 6 p.m. Thursday at St. Peter High School.
Cedar Mountain 87, MLA/C 62
MORGAN — Third-seeded Cedar Mountain downed No. 19 Mountain Lake Area/Comfrey 87-62 in the second round of the Section 2A Boys Basketball Tournament Tuesday.
Blake Schueller had 34 points and 13 rebounds to lead Cedar Mountain, while Zach Sandgren had 24 points and eight rebounds. Blake Steffl had 13 points, 15 assists and four steals also for the Cougars, while Carson Schiller added 8 points.
The Cougars now take on sixth-seeded Lester Prairie at 7:45 p.m. Thursday at Sibley East High School.
NYA 79, MVL 74
NORWOOD YOUNG AMERICA — No. 9-seeded Minnesota Valley Lutheran was unable to hold off a second-half comeback by No. 8 Central High School on Tuesday as the Raiders came back to win 79-74 in the first round of the Section 2AA boys basketball playoffs.
The Chargers held a 40-34 lead at halftime but were outscored 45-34 in the second half.
Pierson Brau led the Chargers with 26 points and seven rebounds, while Brennan Bendix had 22 points. Owen Birkholz and Luke Merseth each had 8 points for MVL.
Michael Mackenthun led the Raiders with 21 points.
The Chargers end their season with an 11-15 record, while NYA moves on to play at top-seeded Waseca on Thursday night.
ACGC 66, Cathedral 47
GROVE CITY — New Ulm Cathedral fell to Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City 66-47 on Tuesday in a second round Section 2A boys basketball playoff game.
The Greyhounds, who finished the season 10-17, were led by Jack Edwards’ 12 points, while Jake Finstad added 10 points. Eli Anderson also had 7 points for the Greyhounds.
ACGC plays top-seeded Springfield at 6 p.m. Thursday at St. Peter High School.
