ST. PETER — As the regulation buzzer sounded in the Section 2A Boys Basketball Tournament semifinals game between BOLD and Cedar Mountain Monday at Gustavus Adolphus College, BOLD’s Hudson Vosika hit a game-tying 3-pointer to send the game to overtime.
BOLD went on to win the game 62-53 to advance to the Section 2A championship game against Madelia Thursday at Minnesota State University.
“I have not [had a shot like that],” Vosika said. “I think it was just the season mentality on the line. If I miss that, we’re done. Stepped up and made the shot.”
Vosika finished the game with 18 points, while Owen Baumgartner and Jack Gross each had 16 points.
“We knew they had a good offense,” Vosika said. “We knew we just had to sit down and control the ball and make plays.”
For Cedar Mountain, Zach Sandgren had 19 points and five rebounds, while Blake Schueller added 18 points, seven rebounds and three blocks. Blake Steffl had 9 points and 10 assists for Cedar Mountain.
“Unfortunately, we picked the wrong night to have the worst shooting night of the year,” Cedar Mountain head coach Brian Pendleton said. “We had some pretty good looks too. Unfortunately, they didn’t go down tonight. We had the guys shooting that we wanted to. Defensively, I thought we were solid all night. You have to tip your cap when somebody makes a shot like that.”
The game started slowly for both teams, where after a 5-5 tie, BOLD jumped out to a 15-5 lead ending on a 3-pointer from Vosika. Cedar Mountain called a timeout to get back on track, immediately going on a 15-2 run, starting with a mid-range jumper from Sandgren and closing on a putback from Schueller, to go up 20-17. Baumgartner made a layup to cut the lead down to 20-19 before the halftime buzzer.
Voskia started the scoring in the second half with a 3-pointer to regain the lead, but Cedar Mountain responded with a 7-0 run, with a 3-pointer and a layup from Sandgren, to go up 27-22. Cedar Mountain continued to control the lead, and an alley-oop from Steffl to Schueller caused the Warriors to call a timeout down 35-29 with 10:34 to play.
BOLD fought back, however, tying the game at 41 with a layup from Will Penkert. Schueller retook the lead with a 3-pointer, but Gross scored an and-one to tie the game once more. A layup from Cedar Mountain’s Jackson Guetter made a layup and Sandgren made a 3-pointer to go up 49-44, forcing another BOLD timeout with 2:29 to play.
A steal from Guetter led to free throws on the other end after the timeout, which Guetter split to go up 50-44. Penkert made a 3-pointer to cut the lead to 50-47, and Cedar Mountain drained several seconds off the clock, with BOLD needing to foul three times before Steffl went to the line for bonus free throws with 27.5 seconds to play.
Steffl missed the free throw, however, setting the stage for Vosika’s game-tying shot as time expired. With momentum on its side, BOLD went on to outscore Cedar Mountain 12-3 in overtime to secure the win.
Cedar Mountain finishes its season with a 25-4 record.
“We’re very happy with how the year turned out,” Pendleton said. “We came into the year kind of hopeful we’d get 16, 18 wins, we ended up getting 25. We were co-conference champions, that’s something that wasn’t expected. Overall, it’s been a great year. But it’s a hard one to swallow when you’re right there.”
