Mathiowetz, Steffl, Hubin headline 2024-25 All-Journal Team
First Team
Morgan Mathiowetz, So., G, St. Mary’s
The Tomahawk-Valley Conference, Tomahawk Division Player of the Year, Mathiowetz scored 1,143 total points, most in state this season, averaging 33.6 points per game. Mathiowetz also averaged 8.2 rebounds, 4.8 assists and 5.6 steals on her way to an All-State selection and made her third All-Conference team. Mathiowetz currently sits at 2,519 career points, sixth all-time among All-Journal qualifying schools as just a sophomore.
Lily Hubin, Jr., G, BLHS
Huban broke the BLHS school record for scoring average this season, av- eraging 27.2 points per game, as well as the steals record with 5.8 per game. Hubin also averaged 7.7 rebounds and 2.4 assists, helping lead the Mustangs to a 15-11 season and a playoff win. Hubin’s basketball IQ and footwork
make her one of the top players in the conference. Hubin is a two-time unanimous All-Conference selection, an All-State Honorable Mention and sits at 1,895 career points, second all-time for the Mustang girls.
Aubrey Steffl, So.,
G, Cedar Mountain Steffl was a force for
Cedar Mountain this sea- son, breaking the school record for career points by a girls basketball player with 1,806 career points. Steffl averaged 22.9 points, 10.4 rebounds, 5.9 assists and 4.8 steals per game, leading the conference in rebounding and earning five triple-doubles. Steffl is a two-time unanimous All-Conference player and was an All-State Honorable Mention.
Leah Bode, Sr., G, Nicollet
A three-time All-Con- ference player and an All- State Honorable Mention this season, Bode had a career year with 19.1 points, 9.2 rebounds, 2.8 steals and 1.5 assists per game. Bode finishes her career with 1,313 points and 719 rebounds and set an example with her work ethic in every practice.
Brooklyn Lewis, Jr., G, New Ulm
Lewis led the Eagles in scoring in her junior campaign, averaging 16.2 points per game along with 4.2 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 3.3 steals. Lewis was an All-State Honorable Mention this year, helping lead the Eagles to a Section 2AAA runner-up finish. She sits at 1,367 points in her career.
Second Team Paige Haala, Sr., G, Sleepy Eye
Haala was Sleepy Eye’s leading scorer this season with 18.1 points per game, surpassing 1,000 career points this season. Haala also averaged 5.3 rebounds, 3 assists and 2.1 steals per game on her way to an All-State Honorable Mention and an All-Conference player.
Avery Freier, So., G, MVL
Freier earned her first All-Conference selection this season, leading the Chargers with 16.8 points per game. The 5-3 Freier also added 3.9 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 1.9 steals, leading the team in assists and tied for the most steals. Freier was voted as the team’s best offensive player, with her playmaking and shooting making a big difference for MVL as the Chargers improved seven wins from a season ago.
Emma Hauger, Sr., G, Springfield
A two-time All-Conference player, Hauger was the Tigers’ team MVP after averaging 17.3 points, 3.5 steals and 3.1 assists per game this sea- son, helping lead the Tigers to a 15-12 record. A 31% shooter from 3-point range and 44% from inside the arc this year, Hauger finished her career with 1,080 points despite missing a season due to injury.
Maddie Backer, Sr., G, New Ulm
One of New Ulm’s top defenders, Backer set the school record for steals in a game with 15 against Waseca on Dec. 13, 2024. Backer averaged 14.1 points, 3.9 assists, 3.7 rebounds and 3.6 steals per game this year and surpassed 1,000 career points, finishing with 1,019. Backer plans on playing basketball for Central College in Iowa next year.
Olivia Schieffert, Fr., G, St. Mary’s
An All-Conference player in her freshman season, Schieffert led the Knights in assists with 5.5 a game while also averaging 14.3 points, 6.2 rebounds and 2.7 assists. Schieffert shot 31.8% from behind the arc and 46.9% overall and helped lead the Knights to a conference championship and state tournament appearance.
Third Team
Shay Wilfahrt, Jr., F, Cathedral
Wilfahrt led the Greyhounds in scoring (13.9 ppg) and rebounding (8.6 rpg) this season while adding 2.8 steals and 2.8 assists per game. Wilfahrt was a 45% shooter and was a solid rim protector with 1.1 blocks per game.
Morgan Hulke, Sr., G, New Ulm
Hulke averaged 11.6 points per game this sea- son but was capable of much more, leading the Eagles in scoring seven times throughout the 24-25 campaign. Hulke was an excellent shooter, making a team-high 73.4% of her free throws and making 52.4% of her shots inside the arc while making 3s at a consistent rate. Hulke also added 4.1 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 2.2 steals per game this season and finished her prep career with 1,461 points for New Ulm.
Cadence Okerman, Sr., G, Sleepy Eye
Sleepy Eye’s point guard this season, Okerman’s guidance of the team helped lead them to the Section 2A Semifinals appearance. Okerman averaged 12 points, a team-high 8.6 rebounds, a team-high 4 steals and a team-high 4.6 assists per game in an All-Conference season. Okerman was particularly strong at the free-throw line, hitting 83.7% of her attempts there.
Olivia Hammer, So., G, MVL
Voted as the team MVP , Hammer fell just four 3-pointers short of a school record, hitting 56 shots from outside the arc this season. Hammer tied for the most steals on the team with 49 and averaged 12.4 points, 3.8 rebounds, two assists and two steals on her way to an All-Conference Honorable Mention.
Savannah Klockziem, Sr., G, Nicollet
An All-Conference selection this season, Klockziem averaged 10.9 points, 7.3 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 2.4 steals this year. Klockziem uses her athleticism to create opportunities for herself or others, or to play hard defense and re- bound. Klockziem finishes her prep career with 913 points and 554 rebounds.
