River Valley girls earn 1st win of season
MANKATO — The River Valley girls earned their first win of the young season at the Loyola/Cleveland indoor track and field invitational at Minnesota State Mankato on Tuesday, placing first out of five teams in the meet while the boys team tied for second.
The River Valley girls won the meet with 86 points, followed by Waseca (76), St. Clair/Immanuel Lutheran (73), Loyola-Cleveland (39) and St. James/Madelia (37). Waseca won the boys side of the meet with 98 points, followed by Loyola-Cleveland and River Valley (61), St. James/Madelia (57) and St. Clair/Immanuel Lutheran (33).
The River Valley girls had nine athletes finish in the top three and two relay teams place first.
Marley Hewitt placed first in the 55-meter dash (8.24), with Yanellie Fernandez placing third (8.33). Hewitt also placed second in the 200 (29.64), while Lydia Dauer placed second in the 400 (1:10.77). Katie Thram placed second in the 800 (2:36.22), Dauer placed third on pole vault (7-0) and Hewitt placed third in the long jump (14-5.5).
The 4×200 relay team of Emma Bluhm, Peyton Kiecker, Marisa Frietag and Frankki Plaetz took first (2:01.69), as did the 4×800 relay team of Thram, Ali Almanza, Emmie McCone and Marissa Pabst (10.51.37).
The River Valley boys had five top-three finishers individually and three first-place relay teams.
Senior Gianluka Fernandez took third in the 55-meter dash (7.07) and second in the 200 (25.13), while Isaac Lopez took second in the 400 (1:01.75), Matthew Groebner took first in the 1,600 (4:43.69) and Paytin Johnson took third in the long jump (16-11.5).
The River Valley boys 4×400 relay team of Groebner, Lucas Hensch, Gianluka Fernandez and Noah Christensen took first (3:47.57), while the 4×800 relay team of Christensen, Matthew Fernandez, Dylan Dewitt and Groebner took first in the 4×800 (8:53.29). The River Valley boys SMR 1,600 relay team of Johnson, McCoy Marti, Robert Romberg and Christensen took first (4:11.35).
